Overview

Thurber has an exciting opportunity for an early career Geotechnical Engineering Intern to join our team in Ottawa, Ontario.

Thurber provides geotechnical, environmental and construction materials engineering and testing services for a variety of industries across Canada. Our multidisciplinary expertise allows us to work on problems related to earth, the environment and construction materials. We solve problems in a wide variety of industries including transportation, building construction, municipal infrastructure, land development, dams and water resources, industrial development, mining, oil and gas, marine and environmental services.

As our Geotechnical Engineering Intern, you will work on varied projects and develop your skills with guidance and mentorship from our senior team.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and execute field investigation programs, including borehole drilling, soil and rock logging, and geotechnical instrumentation installation or monitoring.
  • Provide on-site construction inspection, quality control, and quality assurance materials testing for infrastructure and transportation projects.
  • Travel to various construction sites and work outdoors on field assessments and drilling programs throughout Ontario as required.
  • Supervise the work of field or laboratory technologists and provide daily technical direction.
  • Perform engineering tasks, including borehole data compilation, laboratory testing interpretation, and settlement and slope stability analysis.
  • Work collaboratively with contractors, owners, project engineers, and client representatives.
  • Prepare and write technical reports, proposals, and project fee estimates.
  • Plan and manage assigned project scopes, schedules, and budgets while strictly adhering to company safety and quality standards.

Qualifications and Assets

  • 0 to 3 years of relevant experience in the Geotechnical Engineering field and an undergraduate and/or graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering or Geological Engineering;
  • Class G driver's license;
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment;
  • Able to work effectively individually and in a team;
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Be comfortable driving mid to full-sized pickup trucks in urban, rural, and construction environments;
  • Be available for shift work to meet the changing scheduling demands of our clients;
  • Be comfortable working in a variety of environments, including local and remote construction sites;
  • Have strong computer skills (i.e. spreadsheet and word-processing);
  • Strong understanding of rock and soil mechanics;
  • Experience involving 2D and 3D geotechnical software packages such as RocScience is an asset; and,
  • Be eligible for membership with PEO.

This is an early career position and will be comprised of regular field activities progressively transitioning toward more office based activities, with opportunities for continued career growth within the company.

Base Salary Range

  • $68,000 - $80,000 per year, based on a 40-hour work week.
  • The posted wage range for this position represents the range for the experience and qualifications noted in this posting.
  • The offered wage may be adjusted upward for candidates whose qualifications and experience exceed those expressed in this posting.
  • Candidates with less experience and qualifications may be considered at a reduced starting wage.
