The Role
The Director, Global Asset Management (GAM) Communications is a key member and contributor to the overall success of the Global Wealth Management & Insurance (GWM+I) business by initiating, developing and delivering ongoing communications strategies and plans in support of the GAM leader, as well as related change management and priority initiatives for the business. The incumbent leads complex cross-functional initiatives and works closely with a diverse range of stakeholders to deliver on his/her objectives.
The incumbent must, in coordination with the Director & Head, GWM+I Communications, oversee the development and execution of integrated internal and external communication strategies to support the highly specialized GAM’s key strategic priorities, developing communications strategies that support various business lines and senior leaders within Asset Management through proactive media relations and issues management. This includes playing a lead role in the creative development, project management and oversight of multiple executive, employee and corporate communications initiatives of significant complexity. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for fostering and maintaining an inclusive and empowering work environment and helping develop a best-in-class communications function for GAM Communications, the GWM Communications team and the broader Global Corporate Affairs team. Finally, the incumbent is responsible for anticipating, identifying and managing potential reputational issues and providing appropriate recommendations for risk mitigation and media relations management for the GAM team and its employees, and contributing to reputation and issues management across the GWM+I business line.
Major Accountabilities
1. Strategic Communications
- Accountable for the development and execution of a proactive, strategic annual GAM communications plan for the business and its leadership.
- Responsible for communicating GAM strategy to employees to enhance engagement and awareness – as well as to increase alignment with the overall+I GWM Strategy and the Scotiabank strategic narrative.
- Leads the translation of key enterprise business priorities into communications priorities and clear, strategic plans and tactics.
- Establishing and overseeing the execution of all internal and external communications planning and execution of employee and external public relations activities, including issues management, leader profile building, and proactive media relations for Global Asset Management.
- Play a lead role in identifying and mitigating reputational issues for the business.
- Responsible for EVP executive communications (internal and external) and leader events: executive speech notes, Q&As, video scripts, Town Halls, Leadership forums, quarterly earnings packages etc.
- Guided by the business priorities, develop and execute content for all of GAM multi-channel communications.
- Contribute to the development of a high-impact GWM+I and GAM commuications team (at all times)
- Seek opportunities to expand role and responsibilities and build strategic partnerships across GWM+I and senior business leaders and communications professionals across the Bank to drive alignment and consistency of communications across Scotiabank
- Lead the development of an engaging and sustainable cross-divisional communications infrastructure for GWM+I
Team Management / People
- Deliver inclusive and empowering work environment for direct reports and broader Global Communications team
- Develop and implement best-in-class processes to establish a foundation as a Communications Centre of expertise for the Global Wealth and Insurance Communications team, the Global Communications team and across the Bank
- Coach and support the team in the delivery of the Global Asset Management communications plan in support of the business.
- Implement a strong people management program, including development plans for all direct reports, monitor training programs and opportunities
- Facilitate a culture of open and honest communications by actively participating and contributing to one-on-one touch bases and team meetings, encouraging new ideas and actively sharing knowledge
- Support team members by offering advice and guidance and providing informal and formal coaching
2. Additional Responsibilities
- Is recognized as a subject matter expert by all business partners
- Participate in cross-GWM divisional projects as required
- Ensure communications alignment within and across all areas of GWM with strong ties into the enterprise bank narrative and initiatives
- Manage the day-to-day production of special events (employee engagement events, leader forums, and strategic planning activities to support the GWM leadership team as required)
- Contribute to team meetings
- Support the broader GWM+I Communications team
3. Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
4. Creates an environment in which his/her team pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
5. Builds a high performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and, managing succession and development planning for the team
Education/Work Experience/Designations
- Minimum 12 years of project management and change management experience
- Minimum 12 years in corporate communications, marketing communications or PR
- Exceptional written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate and drive employee engagement across a large employee base, at all levels within the organization
- Knowledge and experience communicating via print, web, visual media and emerging communication platforms; social media experience an asset – with demonstrated experience in leveraging the latest communication vehicles to effectively communicate to employees
- Experience developing and deploying large-scale change management programs across multiple stakeholder groups
- Thorough understanding of Global Wealth Management’s core businesses, organizational structures and delivery channels.
- Strong working knowledge of financials.
- Knowledge and experience of relevant asset management-related ESG trends and developments would be an asset.
- French or Spanish language would be an asset.
- PMP (Project Management Professional) certification or CAPM (Certified Associate Project Manager) would be a definite asset.
Dimensions
- Manages a team of 2 employees based in Canada in support of the EVP and Head of Global Asset Management and the broader GWM leadership team.
- High complexity role requiring proven skills in communications, change management, project management and relationship management
- Required to manage competing priorities and influence multiple stakeholders
- This position works closely with the senior leadership team and must be an experienced and professional leader with the ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships
Working Conditions
- Work in a standard office-based environment; non-standard hours are a common occurrence. Limited travel domestically as appropriate.
