Position Summary
Reporting to the Associate Director, Sustainability, the Sustainability Officer acts as advisor on sustainability-related topics at McGill, in accordance with the priorities of the McGill Office of Sustainability (MOOS). The main duties of the incumbent involve assessing the spatial distribution of waste production, collection, and removal across McGill University’s three campuses (Macdonald Campus, Downtown Campus, and the Gault Nature Reserve) in order to design infrastructural, educational, and policy level interventions to reduce waste production and increase waste diversion rates.. The Sustainability Officer provides key support for the University’s long-term target of becoming zero-waste by 2035, as well as lead other sustainability-related initiatives that are considered a priority by the University. More specifically, the Sustainability Officer must investigate the social patterns and behaviors of material consumption across the campuses patterns among students, staff, and faculty, as well as the public, along with the relationship between these social behaviors and the physical waste infrastructure already present, in order to identify and design these interventions. This role involves nurturing an ongoing relationship with various campus stakeholders – students, staff and faculty – to create a culture of sustainability at McGill.
Primary Responsibilities
- Through a socio-spatial analysis of waste production at McGill, work with campus stakeholders at McGill to determine locations for the installation of hundreds of standardized waste collection bins across the University.
- Develop resources that will support a student volunteer program to promote waste reduction and proper waste management.
- Advise on waste policies and develop other relevant initiatives related to physical infrastructure and education.
- Provide strategic support for the University’s long-term target of becoming a zero-waste campus by 2035, which includes identifying and managing funding opportunities, strengthening waste education initiatives, and working with the Buildings & Grounds team on the development and implementation of institution-level projects.
- As needed, lead the implementation of other key sustainability actions and programs, in alignment with the University’s strategic priorities and/or policies.
- Work with the Sustainability Officer (Monitoring & Reporting) to ensure that strategy progress is tracked in the sustainability dashboard and included in relevant reports.
- Represent the Office of Sustainability in various internal and external committees and meetings.
- Keep abreast of best practices related to sustainability in other universities and large institutions.
- Participate in discussions and communities of practice with peer universities.
- As needed, recruit and supervise intern(s), including training, guidance, and performance monitoring.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders. Demonstrated aptitude for systems thinking, with acute strategic and analytical skills. Excellent people skills. Proven talent for problem solving. Demonstrated organization skills, with the ability to set priorities and multi-task. Attentive to details. Demonstrated ability to work under stress. Proficient with Excel. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) in English. Fluency in French and knowledge of universities environment, an asset.
