Job Summary

The Team

The Provincial Field Services unit is the delivery component of the Ministry’s annual highway construction and rehabilitation programs and is responsible for direct field administration of grading, paving and sealcoat works throughout the province, covering contracted and day labour projects (planned and emergency response). Field services work encompasses all aspects of those administration services as well as the technical aspects of the three construction disciplines.

The Role

The Field Services Assistant supports the Ministry Representative, Field Services, in delivering field services projects by assisting with surveys, inspections, measurements, quality management activities, and administrative functions. This role contributes to the coordination and management of construction activities, including directing day labour on simple projects.This position builds effective working relationships with Ministry staff, contractors, and partners, acting as a liaison to support project delivery and ensure quality outcomes. It also collaborates with government agencies, regulators, utilities, and the public to address concerns, ensure compliance, and coordinate project work.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Have a civil technology diploma plus 2 (two) years related experience in Construction Management or equivalent combination of education and experience, OR;
  • A related engineering degree plus 1(one) years related experience, OR;
  • Grade 12 plus additional construction-related courses (survey, design, materials, hydraulics, blasting, asphalt, etc.) with a minimum of 5 (five) years directly related experience in highway construction or paving.
  • Experience on highway construction or paving projects.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Direct experience in highway construction, negotiating and in applying and interpreting Ministry of Transportation and Transit specifications and contract documents.
  • Experience in developing and managing contracts.
  • Experience in developing and implementing Quality Management systems.
  • Experience in resolving contentious issues with contractors, consultants, partners, and outside agencies.

Provisos

  • Must complete a safety supervision certificate.
  • Valid Class 5 Motor Vehicle License and the provision of a drivers abstract.
  • Must be willing and able to work outside during periods of inclement weather and/or on rough terrain.
  • Ability and willingness to travel throughout the Province of BC.
