Job Summary

The Science Indigenous Student Engagement Coordinator supports and enhances the Indigenous student experience and development within the Faculty of Science by implementing tailored engagement initiatives, providing guidance to students, and fostering a positive learning and community environment across the undergraduate student lifecycle.

The role contributes to Indigenous student recruitment, engagement, retention, and success by connecting students to academic and non-academic resources, facilitating peer and community engagement opportunities, and integrating co-curricular learning opportunities, peer-led initiatives, and culturally responsive support into the academic experience.

Working within established Faculty and institutional priorities, including the UBC Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP) and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) goals, the Coordinator collaborates with various student-support units, student groups, and Indigenous communities to strengthen service coordination, enhance community connection, and support Indigenous student learning, leadership, and success.

Organizational Status

The Science Indigenous Student Engagement Coordinator reports to the Science Indigenous Academic Advisor and is a member of the Science Advising and Student Engagement team within the portfolio of the Associate Dean, Students, Faculty of Science. Science Student Engagement enhances the experience of undergraduate Science students through timely developmental supports and resources to encourage critical thought and learning throughout their academic journey. Science Student Engagement’s connection to Indigenous Science students is not a linear process; it includes milestones of orientation, transition, and career development.

The incumbent works independently with guidance and general supervision from the Indigenous Academic Advisor, and may consult with and seek general supervision from the Assistant Dean, Student Academic Services, Faculty of Science. The Coordinator collaborates with students, staff, faculty, alumni, and university partners to support student learning, leadership, and success.

  • Advises Indigenous students and connect them to appropriate academic, wellness, and campus resources.
  • Identifies and supports students in academic or personal distress and refer to appropriate support services.
  • Trains and coordinates student leaders and volunteers in the implementation of peer-led initiatives to enhance student experience and support their success.
  • Promotes accessible and inclusive opportunities that support Indigenous student recruitment and retention, including participation in outreach and orientation events.
  • Maintains awareness of Indigenous relations and student engagement literature to inform program delivery.

Community Collaboration & Partnership

  • Enhances Indigenous student connection and inclusion through collaborating with and coordinating contributions from academic departments, student groups, orientation and transition teams, and other UBC units and Faculties.
  • Maintains and enhances collaborations with campus Indigenous partners, including the First Nations House of Learning, the Office of Indigenous Strategic Initiatives and other Indigenous communities of practice.
  • Works closely with the Science Advising & Engagement teams to ensure culturally responsive approaches are embedded in regular programming.
  • Collaborates with Recruitment and Admissions teams to support Indigenous student enrolment and transition.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors in judgement may cause serious results and identifiable deterioration to faculty and student relations; reduce services; cause embarrassment; increase event and program costs; and impact negatively the Faculty’s reputation and accountability with organizations, students, faculty and staff. Decisions have an impact on the development of relationships both within the university and in external communities. Decisions affect the credibility of the Science Advising & Student Engagement and the Faculty of Science programs and services, and hence the success of these initiatives university- and community-wide.

Supervision Received

Position is supervised by the Science Indigenous Academic Advisor and the Assistant Dean, Student Academic Services of the Science Advising and Student Engagement team.
