Your role

CBC North is seeking our next Announcer/Operator to lead our Gwich’in language radio program, Nantaii (Country Road), which broadcasts weekdays into the Gwich’in communities of the Western Arctic and Old Crow, Yukon. The successful candidate may be a fluent speaker or a language learner. They will be responsible for researching, preparing and presenting interviews with fluent speakers and with language learners, hosting the show, and preparing archival material for broadcast.

Support and training in radio broadcasting will be provided.

The successful candidate could be based in Yellowknife, Inuvik or elsewhere in the N.W.T.

Key Tasks

Plan and prepare material for broadcast.

Pitch stories, schedule guests, prepare background notes and questions and conduct interviews.

Develop and maintain contact with diverse community sources.

Provide continuity between segments on air.

Edit program material.

The Following Tasks May Also Be Required

Participate in community relations activities to promote the CBC.

Direct a program or program segment in studio or at a remote location.

Maintain an appropriate level of communication with members of the audience.

Archive programs and program scripts and lineups.

Perform incidental technical functions necessary to ensure the smooth and continuous functioning of the station.

Qualifications

The ability to speak, or a demonstrated interest in learning, the Gwich’in language.

Strong writing and interviewing skills.

Computer skills and the ability to learn and use social media networks.

A strong understanding of Indigenous storytelling.

The ability to think critically.

Previous on-air experience in radio or television would be an asset.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
