Date: 3 hours ago
City: Edmonton, AB
Contract type: Full time

Employment Status: Full-time – Permanent

Location: Edmonton Research Park facility

Work Model: Hybrid

The Opportunity

As a Financial Business Partner (Financial Reporting Analyst), you act as a financial resource for the corporate/granting area. You enjoy interpreting and analyzing financial data to assist managers in key decision-making processes. You find strengths in providing forecasting, budgeting and reporting to corporate finance.

This role works closely with non-financial teams across the organization, so it calls for someone who is just as comfortable presenting to a room of program staff as they are building a financial model. You'll be the face of Finance to people who don't speak "finance" every day — as a liaison between corporate finance and programs, you handle concerns regarding any financial matters with clarity and confidence.

You Will Thrive in this Role If You

  • Are a confident, natural communicator who enjoys translating financial data for people who don't work in finance every day.
  • Enjoy building relationships across the organization and can influence decisions through both data and rapport.
  • Enjoy building strong partnerships and influencing decisions through data-driven insights.
  • Are naturally curious and motivated to understand the "why" behind financial results.
  • Can balance strong attention to detail with a strategic, big-picture perspective.
  • Communicate complex financial information in a way that is clear, practical, and meaningful.
  • Take a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Enjoy working in a collaborative environment where your expertise directly contributes to organizational success.

Key Responsibilities

As a Financial Business Partner, you will play a critical role in supporting informed decision-making across the organization by providing financial insight, analysis, and strategic advice. You will:

Financial Planning, Forecasting & Reporting

  • Lead the development of monthly forecasts and annual budgets, helping leaders effectively plan and manage resources.
  • Analyze financial results, identify trends, and provide meaningful insights on budget-to-forecast and forecast-to-actual variances.
  • Prepare and present regular financial reports that support business and operational decision-making.
  • Translate complex financial information into clear, actionable recommendations for leaders and stakeholders.

Accounting & Month-End Close

  • Prepare and post journal entries in accordance with accounting standards.
  • Lead or support month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Apply proper treatment and understanding of deferred revenue and other complex accounting areas.

Business Partnership & Financial Analysis

  • Partner closely with program and functional leaders to understand business needs, assess financial impacts, and support strategic initiatives.
  • Provide thoughtful analysis of program performance, identifying opportunities, risks, and efficiencies.
  • Develop ad hoc financial models, reports, and analyses to support organizational priorities and emerging business needs.

Contract & Funding Oversight

  • Review contracts and amendments to ensure financial commitments, payment terms, and delegated signing authorities are accurately reflected and compliant with organizational policies.
  • Support year-end reporting and audit activities by compiling and validating contractual rights and obligations.
  • Monitor funding agreements and contractual commitments to ensure financial accuracy and accountability.

Trusted Financial Advisor

  • Serve as a valued business partner, providing proactive financial guidance and support to leaders across the organization.
  • Build strong relationships with stakeholders and act as a key link between Finance and operational teams.
  • Help leaders understand the financial implications of decisions and support the achievement of organizational goals through sound financial stewardship.

Qualifications and Skills

Required

Financial & Technical

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • CPA – Chartered Professional Accountant
  • Minimum 3 years related accounting experience
  • Strong analytical and detail orientated skills
  • Strong understanding of accounting standards and their practical application
  • Time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Can effectively work in a changing environment
  • Proficiency with MS Office software

Communication & Relationship Building

Critical for this role – a large part of the job involves working directly with non-financial audiences

  • Proven ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial audiences with confidence and clarity

  • Outgoing, approachable style that builds trust quickly with people outside of finance
  • Strong verbal and written English communication skills
