The Cost Accountant, Heartland Finance position is based in Calgary and reports to the Senior Manager. This role is responsible for supporting the accounting, analysis, and reporting of manufactured polypropylene and feedstocks. The Cost Accountant will monitor feedstock costs, analyze polypropylene manufacturing costs, and evaluate plant performance to provide accurate and meaningful financial insights. With a focus on cost reporting, process improvement, and SOX compliance, this role plays a critical part in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and effectiveness of cost accounting processes while supporting sound business decision-making.

Key Activities And Responsibilities

  • Perform month end accounting and analysis relating to the value of feedstocks, polypropylene and product inventory turnover
  • Ensure accuracy and completeness of financial information within established reporting deadlines
  • Responsible for the analysis of products and variances associated with purchased and manufactured goods
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget/forecast for the cost of feedstocks and polypropylene
  • Participate in the development of new products with the Marketing, Technical Services and Customer Service teams
  • Assist presentations of monthly manufacturing performance results for the Heartland leadership team
  • Develop more efficient and accurate manufacturing reporting
  • Preparation of feedstock intercompany transactions and work closely with other business units to ensure elimination of entries
  • Conduct G/L account reconciliations, providing recommendations to address reconciling items
  • Prioritize workflow and day-to-day tasks, ensuring timely processing in accordance with company guidelines
  • Actively promote and implement business process improvements
  • Review and analyze monthly feedstock and polypropylene inventory and assess costs for accuracy
  • Assist ad hoc projects as needed.
  • Duties may be adjusted on an as needed basis within the Heartland accounting team to meet business needs.

Education, Skills And Experience

  • CPA designation required
  • Minimum 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in cost accounting or a related field
  • Experience in a manufacturing business preferred
  • Proven experience managing month end close processes and consistently delivering accurate results on time
  • Strong understanding of SOX Compliance, internal controls, and audit processes
  • Experience in a manufacturing business preferred
  • Experience with SAP and Power BI is an asset
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and accuracy
  • Effective team player that can manage relationships with interpersonal and communication skills (both written and oral)
  • Proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities
  • Self starter with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines in a dynamic, fast paced, growth oriented environment

Hours

Monday to Friday, full time
