Overview
This is a continuous part-time position starting September 7, 2026.
Looking for a summer job that’s fun, active and makes a difference? The City of Kitchener is hiring creative, positive and energetic leaders to run after-school and weekend programs across the City . If you love working with children and youth creating unforgettable experiences this role is for you.
Children and Youth Leaders are supported by experienced coordinators to lead and deliver programs such as basketball, dance, drama, arts & crafts, and Youth Drop-in.
Responsibilities
- Implements and delivers age appropriate and recreational activities for children and youth.
- Plans, leads and participates in children and youth activities. Modifies programs to accommodate abilities/needs of participants, weather conditions, etc.
- Supervises children and youth at all times.
- Ensure children and youth follow all program rules.
- Assists Inclusion Support Workers and private support workers to accommodate children and youth with special needs.
- Ensures the safety and enjoyment of participants through communication, monitoring, and enforcement of program and facility rules, and addresses unsafe and unacceptable behavior; refers to supervisor as appropriate. Reports all incidents/accidents and assists with camp emergency procedures.
- Assists with the set-up and take down of program equipment and supplies.
- Ensures safe use, condition, and storage of equipment. Reports any issues to supervisor immediately.
- Completes records and reports including attendance, accident/incident reports, etc.
- Responds to participants immediate concerns and/or needs.
- Interacts with and ensures parents/guardians are informed of the participant’s daily activities and overall well-being as required.
- Opens and closes program area. May be required to open and close facility .
- Provides direction, monitors activities, and gives feedback to volunteers.
- Provides first aid as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Education
- Partial secondary school education
Experience
- 1 month of experience working or volunteering with school-aged children in a group setting.
Additional Requirements
- Standard first Aid and CPR Level “C” Certification
- Vulnerable sectors check issued following the date of offer of employment
- To work in children’s programming, candidates must be 15 years of age by first date of employment. To work in youth programming, candidates must be 18 years of age by first date of employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience working or volunteering with school-aged children and/or youth in a group setting (e.g. camp, guides/scouts, school daycare, Sunday school, coaching) OR have demonstrated leadership skills at school or work leading a team, a group or a project.
- Ready for a leadership role in delivering quality programs for children and youth.
- Energetic, engaging and not afraid to have fun and be silly
- Responsible, punctual and have a strong work ethic
- Good relationship-building, communication and problem-solving skills and understand what it means to be part of a team and to follow through on commitments.
- Patient and calm under pressure when working with children and youth.
- Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
