Position Summary

The Laboratory Technician is responsible for supporting maintenance, and control of engineering and laboratory spaces, inventory, equipment, and materials. This role serves as the primary resource for maintaining an organized and efficient engineering shop, managing R&D and laboratory inventory, performing cycle counts, and supporting engineers and scientists with other activities as required (prototype builds, testing activities, and laboratory operation).

The ideal candidate is highly organized, hands-on, detail-oriented, and enjoys creating efficient systems that enable engineering and scientific teams to operate effectively.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Shop & Laboratory Organization

  • Maintain organization, cleanliness, and efficiency of the engineering shop and laboratory spaces.

  • Establish and maintain storage locations, labeling systems, and inventory controls.

  • Organize tools, fixtures, hardware, consumables, and engineering supplies.

  • Ensure workspaces remain safe, clean, and ready for daily operations.

  • Manage engineering, and laboratory R&D inventory including consumables, components, chemicals, hardware, and prototype materials.

  • Perform regular cycle counts and inventory audits.

  • Maintain accurate inventory records within inventory management systems or spreadsheets.

  • Monitor inventory levels and initiate replenishment requests.

  • Receive, inspect, label, and stock incoming materials and supplies.

  • Coordinate with procurement and receiving teams to ensure material availability.

  • Support engineers and scientists with laboratory setup, testing activities, and prototype builds.Prepare materials, components, and equipment required for experiments and development activities.

  • Support laboratory equipment calibration, maintenance, and organization.

  • Assist with equipment moves, installations, and work area setup.

  • Track material usage and consumption trends.

  • Generate reports related to inventory accuracy, cycle count results, and material shortages.

  • Maintain an inventory of engineering tools, laboratory equipment, and assets.

  • Ensure equipment is properly labeled and stored.

  • Track equipment locations and usage where possible

  • Follow all laboratory safety procedures and environmental health and safety requirements.

  • Ensure proper storage and handling of chemicals, laboratory materials, and hazardous substances.

  • Maintain compliance with applicable quality, safety, and regulatory requirements.

  • Support 5S and continuous improvement initiatives throughout laboratory and engineering areas.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Engineering Technology, Mechanical Technology, Biomedical Engineering Technology, Science, Laboratory Technology, or a related technical field.

  • 1-2 years of experience in an engineering, laboratory, manufacturing, 3d printing, machining or technical support environment preferred.

  • Experience with inventory management, stock control, or material handling is considered an asset.

  • Experience supporting R&D or product development teams is preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Strong organizational and inventory management skills.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and inventory tracking systems.

  • Experience performing cycle counts and inventory reconciliation.

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and familiarity with hand tools.

  • Ability to read technical drawings, bills of materials, and work instructions.

  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment and engineering environments.

Working Conditions

This position operates primarily within engineering laboratories, R&D spaces, workshops, and technical work areas. The role requires frequent interaction with engineers, scientists, operations personnel, and procurement teams to ensure materials, equipment, and workspaces are properly maintained and available to support development activities.

Compensation range is $50,000 - $60,000 CAD depending on experience.
