The City of Coquitlam is seeking a Senior Corporate Financial Advisor to join our Finance & Legal team. Reporting to the General Manager, Finance & Legal, you will play a key role in helping shape corporate decision-making by providing strategic financial advice across a wide range of initiatives that impact one of British Columbia's fastest-growing municipalities.

This role extends well beyond traditional budgeting and financial reporting. As a trusted financial advisor, you'll work collaboratively with leaders across the organization to understand operational priorities, evaluate opportunities, identify financial risks, and translate complex business initiatives into meaningful financial analysis that supports informed decision-making.

Success in this role requires curiosity, sound judgement, and the ability to build strong relationships across the organization. You'll take the time to understand the operational context behind major initiatives before helping departments communicate the financial implications of their work. Your work will help shape important decisions that have a lasting impact on our community.

Main Responsibilities

  • Partner with senior leaders across the organization to provide strategic financial advice on major corporate initiatives, operational priorities, and emerging opportunities.
  • Evaluate the financial implications of business cases, Council reports, contracts, policies, legislative changes, and strategic initiatives.
  • Develop financial models, scenario analyses, and long-term financial forecasts to support informed decision-making.
  • Provide expert advice related to operating and capital budgets, funding strategies, revenue generation, financial risk, costing scenarios, cash flow, and long-term financial sustainability.
  • Conduct research and analysis on complex financial issues and recommend innovative solutions that improve organizational performance and financial outcomes.
  • Collaborate with departments to understand operational priorities and translate them into meaningful financial analysis and recommendations.
  • Support departments in effectively communicating the operational drivers behind financial results and strategic initiatives.
  • Review financial information through a corporate lens, ensuring consistency with organizational priorities, financial policies, and best practices.
  • Build trusted relationships across the organization by providing objective, thoughtful, and practical financial advice that supports executive decision-making.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in good standing.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible financial experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing complex financial analysis, business cases, and strategic financial recommendations.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, presentation, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to candidates who possess:

  • Experience developing sophisticated financial models and scenario analyses to support executive decision-making.
  • Experience conducting policy analysis and assessing the financial implications of organizational initiatives.
  • Experience evaluating financial risk and providing recommendations to support strategic decisions.
  • Experience preparing business cases, reports, and strategic financial recommendations.
  • Experience supporting capital planning and infrastructure investment decisions.
  • Experience contributing to long-range financial planning and corporate financial strategies.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a collaborative, relationship-focused finance professional who enjoys partnering with people to solve complex business challenges. You recognize that the best financial advice begins with understanding the operational context, asking thoughtful questions, and building trust before offering recommendations.

You are equally comfortable working through detailed financial analysis and engaging in strategic conversations with senior leaders. You have the ability to translate complex financial information into practical advice that helps others make informed decisions, while maintaining a broad organizational perspective.

You thrive in a fast-paced environment where priorities evolve, curiosity is encouraged, and collaboration leads to better outcomes.
