About the Opportunity

The City of Penticton is looking for two Relief RCMP Guard/Counter Clerks, based in Penticton, B.C.

Reporting to the Cell Block Supervisor, the RCMP Guard/Counter Clerk ensures the care and safety of the incarcerated persons in the detachment in accordance with established regulations and procedures. This role requires initiative, resourcefulness and the ability to analyze situations and determine effective and responsible courses of action.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Ensure the safety and welfare of every prisoner incarcerated in our cell block.
  • Assist regular members in the booking process of prisoners, secure any personal effects.
  • Continuously monitor prisoners in cell block, including periodic physical cell checks.
  • Monitors and documents conduct of inmates, according to established city and RCMP policies, regulations, and procedures.
  • Releases inmates as directed and in the company of a regular member.
  • Accepts mail, completes laundry, and prepares meals for inmates.
  • Monitor and document regular members escorting inmates throughout the cell block.
  • Maintain the overall cleanliness of the guard room, cell block and secure bay.
  • On occasion, appears in court to present evidence as required.
  • Stays current with city and RCMP policy as it applies to the cell block and the guard position.
  • Performs related work as required and assigned.

Education and Qualifications

  • Adult Correction Officer Program through Justice Institute or equivalent.
  • R.C.M.P. Enhanced Security Clearance, please see below for details.
  • First Aid and CPR Certification.
  • Strong computer skills with ability to complete electronic forms with high level of accuracy.
  • Knowledge of RCMP computer applications, RCMP Policy, and police radio equipment.
  • Strong communication skills with ability to act effectively under stressful circumstances.
  • Necessary knowledge of security protection practices.
  • Necessary knowledge of Human Rights Act.
  • Necessary knowledge of emergency alarm systems.

Enhanced Security Clearance Details

  • The successful candidate must be able to obtain and maintain Enhanced Reliability Status as a condition of employment, in accordance with the Government of Canada's Directive on Security Screening. Applicants must provide a complete and verifiable five (5) year history, including residencies, employment, education, and other activities, with no unexplained gaps. Periods of six (6) consecutive months or more spent outside of Canada must be disclosed and may require additional verification. Screening may include identity verification, criminal record checks, reference checks, credit check and other background inquires relevant to the position.
