The Position

Reporting to the Director, Negotiations, the Organizer is responsible for identifying, assessing, developing, and advancing organizing opportunities that support HSAA's growth and strategic objectives. The position plays a key role in certification campaigns, worker outreach, organizing, and membership growth initiatives.

The Organizer works directly with workers, member leaders, staff, and other stakeholders to build relationships, assess workplace issues, support campaign development, and help move organizing efforts from initial contact through to application and certification, where appropriate. The position requires strong judgment, political acuity, strategic discipline, and the ability to work effectively in confidential, fast-paced, and often sensitive environments.

This is a field-oriented role that requires flexibility, strong communication skills, and a clear commitment to the principles of unionism, solidarity, and worker led organizing.

Key Responsibilities Include But Not Limited To

  • Identifying and assessing opportunities to expand HSAA's membership and bargaining unit representation.
  • Leading and supporting organizing campaigns designed to bring new groups of workers into HSAA.
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with employees, workplace leaders, member activists, and staff involved in organizing initiatives.
  • Conducting one-on-one organizing conversations and helping workers identify key workplace issues, shared interests, and campaign priorities.
  • Supporting the development of organizing committees and worker leadership capacity in targeted workplaces.
  • Developing campaign plans, timelines, outreach strategies, and escalation approaches to advance organizing objectives.
  • Supporting applications, evidence gathering, and related processes required for certification and other proceedings before the Alberta Labour Relations Board.
  • Working collaboratively with HSAA staff and leadership to align organizing initiatives with operational priorities, bargaining realities, and broader union strategy.
  • Helping prepare organizing materials, assessments, reports, briefings, and recommendations for internal use.
  • Maintaining accurate, timely, and confidential records related to organizing activity and campaign progress.
  • Representing HSAA in a professional, credible, and effective manner at all times.

You bring strong relationship-building skills and a natural ability to connect with people from all walks of life. You know how to motivate, engage, and organize workers toward collective action, and you build the trust needed to move a campaign from first conversation through to certification.

You may bring direct experience leading or supporting certification campaigns, and time spent in a trade union environment — particularly in health care or the public sector — is a strong asset. Familiarity with Alberta's health-care system, workforce structure, and labour relations landscape, along with experience in mobilization or campaign-based work, will serve you well in this role. Comfort using databases, digital outreach tools, and campaign tracking systems rounds out the skill set we're looking for.

Qualifications, Knowledge, And Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Labour Studies, Industrial Relations, Political Science, Communications, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum of five to seven (5-7) years of progressive experience
  • Demonstrated experience in union organizing, labour relations, advocacy, campaigning, or other related organizing environments.
  • Strong understanding of union organizing principles, worker engagement, campaign development, and leadership identification.
  • Knowledge of Alberta labour relations legislation and certification processes, or the ability to acquire such knowledge quickly.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust and credibility with diverse groups of workers.
  • Demonstrated strategic thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to assess organizing opportunities, risks, and campaign readiness.
  • Strong planning, coordination, and time management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality.
  • Strong written communication skills for reports, campaign materials, and internal briefings.
  • Ability to travel within Alberta and work outside regular business hours as operationally required.
  • Valid Alberta driver's licence and access to reliable transportation.
  • Equivalent experience in member representation, mobilization, bargaining support, or campaign work will be considered.

Competitive Compensation: $60.10 to $80.45 per hour ($109,382 to $146,419 annually)
