The Opportunity
The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting a Welder to fill a full-time (12-month term) position. You will perform welding, design, fabrication and estimating work on a large variety of City vehicles, equipment, pipes and tools in the Garage and in the field.
Top Key Responsibilities
- Provide Welding Services and Metal Fabrication Work - Construct, rebuild, modify, and repair a wide variety of metal tools, equipment, utility components, bridge components, piping systems, tanks, and pressure systems.
- Repair and Maintain Mechanical Equipment and Infrastructure - Perform welding repairs on mechanical equipment, municipal assets, utility systems, and structural components to ensure operational reliability.
- Design and Layout Specialized Metal Structures and Equipment - Create layouts and designs for custom equipment and structures such as truck decks, trailers, pressure systems, safety equipment, and other specialized fabrication projects.
- Interpret Verbal Instructions, Sketches, and Specifications - Develop fabrication plans and construct equipment based on verbal descriptions, rough sketches, drawings, and operational requirements.
- Estimate Project Costs, Materials, and Labour Requirements - Assess fabrication and welding projects by estimating time, materials, labour requirements, equipment needs, and expected downtime.
- Prepare and Submit Tenders and Project Quotes - Provide cost estimates, quotations, and tender submissions for fabrication and modification projects when required.
- Provide Mobile and Field Welding Services - Operate welding trucks and portable welding equipment to perform repairs and fabrication work at various municipal facilities, plants, bridges, vaults, and field locations.
- Maintain Welding Equipment, Vehicles, and Inventory - Ensure welding equipment, welding trucks, tools, and supplies are maintained in safe working condition and readily available for operational needs.
- Respond to Emergency Repairs on Pressure Systems - Perform emergency welding and repair work on high-pressure systems, applying Alberta B Pressure Welder certification requirements when necessary.
- Promote and Comply with Health and Safety Requirements - Adhere to all health and safety legislation, policies, procedures, inspections, hazard assessments, incident reporting, training requirements, and safe work practices while maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
As our preferred candidate, you will have
- High school education plus an Alberta Journeyperson's Welding Certificate (3 eight-week courses at a technical institute) plus 4 years practical training. Alberta "B-Pressure" welding certificate is desirable (must be retested every 2 years).
- One year of additional experience performing mechanic's duties, working with welding equipment and materials, preferably in a Public Works Garage, or equivalent, to gain proficiency in performing repairs on a large variety of vehicles and equipment.
- Knowledge of welding methods (ARC, MIG, TIG & GAS), tools, materials and equipment and types of metal (Cast, Aluminum, Brass, Stainless Steel). Must refer to Welder's & Pipefitter's handbooks and Boiler branch codes, as required.
- Considerable independence of judgment in technical and mechanical aspects of the work required.
- A valid Alberta Class 3 Driver's License.
- Must supply a full set of specified Welder's tools and Mechanic's tools, and be skilled in the use of such tools and other equipment in the Garage.
- Be efficient in drafting and reading prints and rough sketches.
- Must exert heavy - high physical effort, working with heavy parts and to work in fatiguing or awkward positions (i.e. maintaining a steady position, considerable bending and standing).
- Ability to work in conditions which are wet, dirty, greasy and noisy. Work in extreme cold and hot environments; to work in malodorous unhygienic conditions in contact with live pathogens, and gas. Must be inoculated for tetanus and polio to combat water bourn diseases.
- Ability to exercise care and to follow all sub-department specific safety requirements including those safety precautions involved with welding either in confined spaces or around gases and fumes that are unknown.

Remuneration: $41.80 to $44.26 per hour
Hours of Work: 80 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work may be required when needed.
Additional Information: The term of this position is anticipated to be approximately 12 months or upon the return of the incumbent.
