The Opportunity

The Finance Department provides financial leadership, advice and support to the Corporation and assists with the delivery of Council’s Strategic plan through its four essential services: accounting services, corporate finance, procurement and revenue management. The department's main deliverables include the audited financial statements, coordinating the annual business plan and budget, treasury and debt management, procurement administration and support, property tax revenue management, and water and wastewater revenue management.

Reporting to the Supervisor of Revenue, the Revenue Assistant (Co-op) is responsible for supporting the delivery of departmental services and programs, as well as assisting the Revenue Branch with special projects. Specifically, this position distributes incoming mail, performs data entry functions, inputs customer account adjustments and master file changes, and mails arrears notices and registered letters. Additionally, this position scans and saves documents, files documents, and assists with customer service inquiries. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the efficient delivery of revenue services to residents and Staff of the City of Barrie.

Administrative Support

  • Assists staff and the Supervisor with day-to-day administrative functions of the branch, which includes:
    • distributing incoming internal and external mail and faxes to correct individuals;
    • printing, enveloping, and mailing customer correspondence;
    • performing data entry functions and verifying accuracy of entered data
    • inputting customer account adjustments and master file changes; and undertaking projects for corporate initiatives, when required.

Customer Service

  • Assists the Supervisor in providing information to residents and Departments regarding Revenue services, procedures, and operations
  • Receives and responds to questions, inquiries, and requests through various channels of communication such as telephone, e-mail, and in person, which involves referencing the City website, searching the internet, or contacting City Departments.
  • Redirects complex questions, inquiries, requests and/or complaints from the general public to the Supervisor or appropriate Staff.

Record and Files Maintenance

  • Assists staff and the Supervisor with record management functions, which includes:
    • scanning and saving documents to the correct network location; sorting, coding, and filing documents;
    • retrieving files in the closed file report and boxing files for transfer to the Records and Information Department;
    • preparing, maintaining, and processing records.
    • performs other duties as assigned or as required in accordance with branch, departmental, divisional and/or corporate objectives.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)

  • Currently enrolled in a recognized College or University Co-op program

Experience

  • Three (3) months experience performing duties related to the major responsibilities of the position.

  • General knowledge of principles related to office administration
  • Demonstrated ability to
    • maintain a high standard of public relations at all times
    • work collaboratively in a group setting to achieve a desired objective, goal and/or outcome

  • Basic attention to detail, administrative, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving, time management, oral communication, and written communication skills
  • Basic computer literacy utilizing Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Word)

Other Important Information

Work Term: September to December 2026

Location: City Hall, 70 Collier Street, Barrie, Ontario

Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week in accordance with the Collective Agreement

Wage: $20.04 to $27.30 per hour
