The Natural Resources, Transportation, and Indigenous Legal Group, Indigenous Legal Relations, Barrister Unit is seeking one full-time PEA Legal Counsel 2. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of Aboriginal law in British Columbia, an area that continues to evolve rapidly following the constitutional recognition of Indigenous rights under section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. For over two decades, a dedicated team within the Legal Services Branch has provided strategic advice and representation on these complex matters, supporting the Province in advancing reconciliation and navigating Indigenous legal issues that impact nearly all aspects of Crown conduct.

The successful candidate must be able to work independently and collaboratively within litigation teams. Responsibilities include legal research, drafting pleadings and factums, managing large document volumes, and appearing before courts and tribunals on behalf of the Province. Candidates must demonstrate strong knowledge of Aboriginal, constitutional, or administrative law, along with familiarity with the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, provincial principles, and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Excellent organizational, communication, and teamwork skills are essential, as is the ability to manage competing priorities and provide clear reporting to clients.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Must be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing OR immediately eligible for call to the Law Society of British Columbia with between six (6) and eleven (11) years of call (called between 2016-2021) or between six (6) and eleven (11) years of relevant practice experience, as a lawyer, if called for more than eleven (11) years (prior to 2016).*
  • Current civil litigation experience, including the conduct of actions, petitions, and applications

Note: Current civil litigation experience is defined as the experience normally associated with a lawyer whose primary position and role throughout the four years preceding their application has been as litigation counsel and who have contributed to the conduct of litigation or have been an active member of a litigation team.

  • *To be considered for this position, if you have more than eleven (11) years of call, your materials must clearly explain how your relevant practice experience, as a lawyer, is less than your years of call.
