Position Details

The University of Lethbridge Library’s Technical Services Team requires support for the functions and services they provide to the Library. Working under the Serials Library Operations Specialist, student assistant duties may include, but are not limited to: preparing print journals and maintaining the Library’s print serials and microfilm collections (cleaning, shelving, shifting collections, etc.), basic data entry and filing, opening the mail, and other general office duties including other projects as required.

The Digitization Team coordinates local digitization efforts and explores related initiatives that support both the University of Lethbridge Strategic Plan and the Library Academic Plan. Working under the guidance of the Digitization Team Coordinator, tasks may include but are not limited to, developing proficiency in the use of various equipment used for converting analog materials into digital formats, digitizing materials (this position entails a significant amount of scanning of paper materials), using CONTENTdm (the Library’s digital library software) to upload digitized materials, and metadata into digital collections and transcription or creation of original metadata.

The University Archives was established at the initial stages of the institution’s birth in 1967. Retaining all records pertinent to the formation of the University was discussed in the first interim meeting of the Board of Governors in the fall of 1966. Its primary purpose is to appraise, acquire, arrange, describe, preserve, and make available records that reflect the teaching, research and service conducted at the University of Lethbridge. This role will help support the Archives by doing the following:

  • Helping digitize and organize archival materials, including photographs.
  • Assisting with digital file clean up and organization.
  • Supporting database work by adding content descriptions and ensuring metadata is accurate.
  • Physically processing records that have been selected for inclusion in the Archives, such as removing binders, staples, and clips, placing material in archival folders, and boxing and shelving materials as directed.

Hours of Work

Part time hours. Shifts will be scheduled during regular Library office hours (Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM ) and will be flexible around any scheduled classes.

Rate of Pay

$18.80 per hour.

Position Qualifications Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills (oral and written);
  • Professional conduct whether working independently or in team;
  • Attention to detail;
  • Capable of working independently;
  • Strong organizational skills;
  • Knowledge of copying, printing and scanning technologies;
  • Proficiency with Excel and capable of learning new software applications;
  • Some physical strength will be required in the lifting of moving heavy boxes up to 22.7kg/50lbs.
  • Must be full or part time student (Lethbridge Campus).

Further knowledge and skills that are beneficial include:

  • Previous experience in a library environment (knowledge of Library of Congress Classification System);
  • Information literacy skills and knowledge of Library/University website;
  • Previous experience with digitization methodologies and projects.
