General Description
While ensuring a culture of safety and personal excellence in every aspect of maintenance, the Fleet Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for all daily activities of the maintenance facility, the fleet and employees. The Supervisor will provide training to the mechanics, including coaching and documenting discipline, when necessary. The Supervisor fosters collaboration between and among personnel and creates a culture of Servant Leadership. The supervisor coaches the team to work effectively on company-owned vehicles, perform high-quality repairs and respond to driver VCRs.
As a Maintenance Supervisor with us the minimum responsibilities are:
- Review safety protocols and practices regularly with the maintenance team and maintenance manager to ensure adherence to district and corporate safety programs and provincial regulatory requirements.
- Work with Maintenance Manager to manage related administrative matters for team, maintenance of employee records, records of all preventive and corrective maintenance performed, and recording of all information into RTA Maintenance Software, provide input for yearly budget for approval.
- Oversee work assignments, scheduling, preventative maintenance (PM), and repairs, ensuring efficient shop operations.
- Assists mechanics in troubleshooting and diagnosis, including dedicated time spent on the shop floor.
- Coordinate with Operations to ensure fleet and equipment uptime is maximized without compromising safety.
- Monitor labor costs and parts usage by type of repair to achieve appropriate labor costs (standard repair times) and parts usage.
- Conduct periodic checks to make sure PMs are up to date and trucks are safe to minimize roadside breakdowns and MTO issues.
- Participate in joint health and safety committee, conduct daily toolbox meetings, and lead monthly department safety meetings.
- Periodically audit safety programs and inspect facility (e.g., lock outs, exit lights, extinguishers). Work with Maintenance Manager to monitor shop safety and housekeeping.
- Recruit, train, and manage mechanics, ensuring a skilled workforce capable of accurate diagnostics and high-quality repairs.
- Provide coaching and leadership to the maintenance team, fostering a culture of efficiency, accountability, and continuous improvement.
What We Need From You
- Thorough knowledge of safe working practices and applicable provincial regulations is an asset.
- 2-3 years of formal or informal supervisory experience preferred,
- Strong knowledge of heavy-duty trucks is essential.
- Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic or Truck and Trailer Mechanic license.
- Knowledge of waste management industry is preferred.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant trades experience (e.g., mechanic) is considered an asset.
- Familiarity with container shops and welding is an advantage.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to read, interpret, estimate, calculate, and document maintenance-related data.
- Proficiency with computers and technology.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to effectively manage and develop a high-performing team.
- Must be able to pass all pre-employment requirements
