Vivarium Research Technician at Alberta Health Services

The Animal Care Technician provides humane care for research animals within the Cross Cancer Institute Vivarium, ensuring compliance with Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) guidelines and institutional standards. This role is essential to supporting Cancer Care Alberta’s research programs by maintaining high standards of animal welfare, facility operations, and regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities include daily animal husbandry activities such as feeding, watering, health monitoring, cage changing, and maintaining a clean and sanitized environment through cleaning, disinfection, cage washing, and equipment sterilization. The incumbent also provides technical support to Principal Investigators, research staff, and students by assisting with laboratory animal procedures, delivering training, and contributing to the optimization of research methodologies. The position is responsible for maintaining accurate records related to animal health, breeding colonies, census data, and the use of transgenic and gene knockout mouse strains using specialized database systems.

Required Qualifications

One or more of the following: Animal Health Technologist Diploma. Registered Veterinary Technologist Certification. Bachelor of Science.

Additional Required Qualifications

Strong attention to detail, excellent documentation skills, and competency in laboratory animal science techniques, including rodent handling, anesthesia, and injections, are required. A working knowledge of biosafety, radiation safety, and chemical safety as they relate to animal research is essential. The role involves physical demands, including prolonged standing and handling heavy bags of feed, cages, and equipment, and requires a strong commitment to animal welfare, teamwork, and scientific excellence.

Registered Laboratory Animal Technician through The Canadian for Laboratory Animal Science. Radiation Safety and Biosafety training.
