Assistant Manager, Transportation at Grande Yellowhead Public School Division
Grande Yellowhead Public School Division invites applications for a 1.0 FTE Assistant Manager, Transportation based out of the Educational Services Centre in Edson, AB. Transportation Services is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of approximately 2,300 students across the division.
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (1.0 FTE), Monday to Friday
Location: Educational Services Centre
Summary: Grande Yellowhead Public School Division is seeking a dedicated, highly organized, and proactive Assistant Manager of Transportation. Reporting directly to the Director of Transportation, you will play a key leadership role in overseeing day-to-day transportation operations, managing team performance, and ensuring the safe, efficient transport of students across the division.
Roles and Responsibilities
Operational Leadership & Supervision
Provide leadership on all operational matters related to Transportation Services.
Assign daily work priorities to Transportation Assistants and supervise their work.
Supervise the daily work of bus drivers, including professional development, and recruitment participation.
Maintain regular dialogue with drivers and staff to recognize strong performance and address concerns.
Provide guidance for same-day operational decisions that exceed Transportation Assistant authority.
Emergency & Incident Management
Manage dispatch, including real-time triage for delays, missed stops, breakdowns, and rescue bus coordination.
Direct drivers and contractors during emergent situations or route concerns, ensuring quick, safety-focused resolution.
Handle emergencies and crisis situations, providing clear leadership and direction (e.g., collisions, adverse weather).
Oversee incident documentation, including data collection and reporting for investigations.
Policy, Compliance & Data Integrity
Ensure application of Board Policies, Administrative Procedures, and all regulatory compliance.
Assist with the management of financial processes including BD Payroll entry, vendor invoice validation, contractor invoice processing, and accounts payable assistance.
Oversee the department fee management system and administration of parent-provided transportation contracts.
Maintain records, data integrity in routing systems, and ensure route accuracy (details, travel direction, kilometers, timing).
Administer and monitor GPS, bus video, and radio systems, including equipment troubleshooting and lifecycle management.
Oversee driver certifications, qualifications, and ongoing training requirements.
Provide route optimization and data analysis reports for the Director of Transportation.
Stakeholder Engagement
Respond promptly and objectively to complaints/concerns from parents, the public, principals, and elected representatives.
Facilitate complaint investigations and escalate to the Operations Manager or Director as appropriate.
Liaise with school administration, including providing training on systems like Bus Planner Web and address entry in PowerSchool.
Ensure a welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe riding environment for all students.
Assist with transportation requests regarding policies, appeals, and student service changes.
Operations & Continuity
Assist with day-to-day route coverage, route redesign, optimization, and planning.
Ensure bus drivers maintain vehicles in a safe, clean condition.
Assist with the development and implementation of department processes and procedures.
When the Operations Manager is absent, manage essential operational and safety matters to sustain continuity, ensuring discipline and informed escalation.
Provide the information the Director of Transportation or Operations Manager requires to perform their role effectively.
Handle other duties as assigned by the Director of Transportation or Operations Manager.
Qualifications & Key Competencies
Experience: Proven supervisory or leadership experience in transportation, fleet management, or public logistics (school bus operations experience preferred).
Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain strong working relationships with drivers, staff, school personnel, and external partners.
Problem-Solving & Crisis Management: Strong decision-making skills with the ability to manage emergent situations calmly and effectively.
Technical Proficiency: Comfortable using transportation software, databases, and general office productivity tools (spreadsheets, timesheets, calendar scheduling).
Knowledge: Familiarity with vehicle safety standards, student transportation regulations, and policy administration.
Valid Class 1 or 2 operator’s licence with S-Endorsement is an asset.

The Division
Grande Yellowhead Public School Division (GYPSD) stretches from Jasper National Park, east to Evansburg, south of Cadomin, and northwest to Grande Cache. The jurisdiction includes 15 schools, 4 Learning Connection Centres, approximately 4300 students and 600 staff. The Division is governed by seven elected Trustees, and an approximate budget of $70 million.
Given the extensive geographical area and the necessity for the Secretary Treasurer to maintain a visible presence in schools and foster strong relationships, this position is designated as in-office and will not be eligible for remote or hybrid work arrangements.
