About The Role
With a passion for care towards residents, families and team members, the Therapy Assistant is accountable for providing opportunities for the residents to realize their maximum potential. The Therapy Assistant provides services responsive to the holistic needs of the residents and promotes choice while maintaining dignity and facilitating independence.
What You Will Do
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Resident Centered Care: Promotes service excellence through active participation with the Interdisciplinary Team to achieve and maintain quality resident care within the scope of Therapy as directed by the Occupational Therapist, Physical Therapist, and/or Recreation Therapist.
- Respects the resident’s rights and individuality.
- Promotes and is responsive to the resident’s holistic needs.
- Provides services as indicated by Therapy assessment and resident goals.
- Informs the Therapist when resident needs alter and assists in implementing change.
- Provides functional support and assistance in the area of mobility, comfort, self-care and intellectual stimulation under the direction of the Therapist.
- Works collaboratively with the resident while maintaining an understanding of the resident’s need to make choices consistent with their own values and preferences. 2. Documentation: Accurate, comprehensive, and timely documentation of resident care interventions and outcomes in alignment with Bethany policies and procedures.
- Documents in healthcare records in accordance with policy, procedure, and professional standards.
- Documents summary of resident’s progress, involvement in groups, and 1:1 programs as required.
- Communicates resident changes and unusual occurrences as appropriate. 3. Safety: Contributes to a safe environment for residents, team, and self by always understanding and adhering to safety guidelines and practices. 4. Team Work: Cares for and actively participates and assists the Interdisciplinary Team to achieve and maintain a responsible atmosphere of resident centered care.
- Promotes constructive caring relationships with the corporate, facility and interdisciplinary support teams, as well as residents, families, volunteers, and visitors.
- Assists the Interdisciplinary Team to provide resident centered services.
- Assists in the review of rehabilitation or recreation programs and actively participates in the implementation and evaluation of new programs and services.
- Contributes to the establishment of short- and long-term goals for the resident.
- Assists in coordinating and guiding volunteers who participate with therapy programs and orientates them to programs.
- What You Bring: QUALIFICATIONS 1. Education
- Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent for aide roles
- Therapy Assistant Diploma or equivalent required for roles performing rehabilitation (OT/PT) duties
- Therapy Assistant Diploma or equivalent preferred for roles solely performing recreational therapy duties. 2. Experience
- One year Occupational/Physical Therapy experience required for OTA role
- One year Recreation Therapy experience required for RTA role
- A working knowledge of a variety of Therapy program modalities required
- Prior related experience with dementia or long-term care residents preferred. 3. Additional skills
- Able to work effectively in a physically and mentally demanding environment
- Demonstrate ability to understand, speak, read, and write effectively in English
- Excellent observation, communication, and problem-solving skills
- Must be able to operate simple tools to maintain or fix equipment
- Recreation Assistants must hold a current First Aid and CPR certificate if required to assist on outings
- Recreation Assistants must hold a Class 4 License if required to drive a Bethany vehicle (e.g., bus or van site specific.)
