Public Works Leadhand (Sand Shift) at Strathcona County

This posting is for multiple seasonal full-time positions for up to 6 months

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safety of the crew and site
  • Assist the Project Foreperson by planning the activities of a work crew to meet daily work requirements
  • Directly supervise the work of the crew, as well assist the Project Foreperson in project related tasks and employee development
  • Monitor performance of the work crew reporting to this position and assist with performance appraisals
  • Responsible for productivity, quality control, on-site material and employee management
  • Work periodically evaluated through discussion and direct observation by senior supervisory personnel
  • Conduct daily tailgate safety meetings with the work crew to review issues and concerns, while training them in the standard operating procedures, hazard assessments and safety policies
  • Maintain excellent public relations and on-site communication with residents, the general public, other departments and personnel, as well as contractors involved with daily work activities
  • Perform work with limited supervision
  • Contact higher authority whenever matters of a difficult or unusual nature arise

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of 1500 hours of leadership experience
  • Supervisory courses and/or leadership training is considered an asset
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills, as well as proven ability in team building and staff development
  • Demonstrate strong technical and computer skills, basic skills in Microsoft Office (i.e. Word, Excel, OneNote, etc.)
  • Understanding of the departments winter maintenance policies and practices
  • Ability to manage and direct multiple crews and staff members

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Alberta Class 3 Driver’s licence (or higher) and submission of a Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Valid Airbrake (Q) endorsement
  • Shift work is required - this position works a rotating 12-hour shift of days and nights (7 days on/7 days off)
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions, including adverse weather
  • Ability to perform physical labour which includes moderate to heavy lifting (up to 50 pounds), standing, bending, shoveling, etc

NOTE: Assignments are interim in nature and are valid only for the length of time required to complete the specific project in question. Once the project is complete, employee reverts to their regular classification. Winter Operations typically run from October to April.
