The Saskatchewan Parks accessible day-use pavilions are the first of a series of standardized accessible day-use pavilions to be constructed throughout the Saskatchewan Provincial Park system. The initial four pavilions located in Echo Valley, Buffalo Pound, Pike Lake, and Blackstrap Provincial Parks were completed in the March 2022.

The goal of the pavilions was to provide an iconic multi-functional, barrier-free accessible covered space in park day-use areas, to enhance the park visitor experience and facilitate family picnics and large group gatherings such as family reunions, social events, and wedding receptions. In addition to providing shelter and seating areas, each pavilion includes a large wood firepit, a food preparation area and BBQ and a serving table.

Conceptually the pavilions are based on a single triangular module or ‘leaf’, which can be configured in a multitude of ways to adapt to site opportunities and constraints, as well as allow the building area to expand and contract as dictated by budget and program. The initial offerings were all configured in a similar manner with each including an 1,875 square foot main pavilion and an adjacent 500 square foot satellite pavilion. While using the same standard details, the pavilions at each park were tailored to their individual sites, considering views, prevailing winds, topography, and existing infrastructure through a process of rotating and mirroring modules as well as through positioning of the adjacent satellite pavilions. Future versions of the pavilion will benefit from a well-defined module that allows a multitude of configurations and variations. The use of wood enriches the user experience and grounds the pavilions in their park settings, producing a design which is iconic while being sensitive to place.
