Kildonan Park Maintenance Building at 1x1 architecture inc.

Established in 1909 Kildonan Park is one of several regional parks in the City of Winnipeg. Designed by George Champion, the 96 acre (39 ha) public amenity is home to the dramatic open-air theatre Rainbow Stage, Peguis Pavilion, swimming pool, and numerous outdoor recreational areas.

The Kildonan Park Maintenance Building was designed to consolidate a collection of buildings housing a variety of functions required for maintaining the park grounds and facilities. The building features three large garage bays, including one that doubles as a wash bay, a large staff area with change rooms and a lunch/meeting area. There is ample space to accommodate both permanent park staff as well as a large compliment of seasonal employees. An exterior universal washroom serves the park patrons.

The building frames the traditional English garden on the west side of the park. A dark vertical reverse board-and-batten cladding compliments the lush greenery of the park's natural vegetation. The large fascia of the roof mimics other modernist buildings throughout the park while the angular overhangs create dynamic shadows at the primary entrance to the building.
