Harvest Operations is currently recruiting a Team Lead, Health and Safety, reporting to the Vice President, Operations The Team Lead, Health and Safety is responsible for practical, legally compliant, and risk-based H&S requirements into all aspects of the business, including operations, projects, maintenance, field execution, contractor activities, emergency response, and corporate decision-making. The role provides independent, objective advice to senior leadership on H&S risks, performance, and emerging issues, while influencing both leaders and frontline personnel to support disciplined, safe operational execution. This is a full-time, permanent position based out of the Calgary Corporate Office.

What you will do
H&S Leadership, Strategy & Culture
- Develop, maintain, and execute an H&S strategy, annual H&S plans and multi-year roadmap aligned with Harvest's business plans, operational risk profile, and corporate objectives.
- Establish clear H&S standards, objectives, leading and lagging indicators, accountabilities, and performance targets for corporate, operational and project teams.
- Coach and influence executives, managers, supervisors, employees, and contractors to demonstrate active H&S leadership and personal ownership of risk controls.
- Promote effective joint work site health and safety processes, field engagement, safety meetings, initiatives, recognition, learning/review teams and feedback mechanisms.
- Ensure material H&S risks, legal obligations and environmental liabilities are considered in operational planning, capital projects, acquisitions/divestitures, shutdowns/turnarounds and management of change decisions.
H&S Management Systems, Governance & Assurance
- Own, maintain and continually improve the Harvest SHEMS, including policies, standards, procedures, safe work practices, assurance processes, document control, and management review.
- Define H&S governance, risk escalation thresholds, authority levels, reporting cadence, committee structures, and expectations for business unit participation.
- Ensure current identification, interpretation, and communication of applicable H&S legal and other requirements.
- Establish and steward an annual H&S audits, inspection, and assurance plan; verify field implementation; track findings; and ensure corrective and preventive actions are closed effectively.
- Identify system gaps, benchmark against industry practices, lead improvement initiatives and verify effectiveness through metrics, audits and field validation.
Operational H&S, Environmental & Regulatory Performance
- Ensure effective programs for hazard assessment, job safety analysis, safe work permits, critical task controls and other high-risk work.
- Define H&S competency requirements and ensure appropriate training and field verification.
- Oversee programs for industrial hygiene, exposure monitoring & occupational illness prevention.
- Implement targeted SIF prevention & critical control verification.
- Manage contractor H&S prequalification, onboarding, oversight and performance.
- Establish and maintain constructive working relationships with regulators and agencies.
- Ensure accurate and timely regulatory reporting, submissions and compliance filings.
Emergency Management, Performance & Leadership
- Own and maintain emergency management and response frameworks, plans and crisis management procedures.
- Ensure readiness and lead/support response to incidents, emergencies and business interruptions.
- Ensure effective incident management reporting, investigation, root cause analysis, corrective actions and knowledge sharing.
- Establish and report meaningful H&S indicators and provide decision-useful insights to leadership.
- Ensure data integrity and escalate significant risks and issues.
- Lead, coach and develop the H&S team; manage staffing, consultants and budget.
- Partner across the organization to integrate H&S into business processes.
What are we looking for
Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:
- 15+ years of progressively responsible health and safety experience in oil and gas or other high-hazard industries, including field operations.
- 10+ years of leadership experience, including supervision of H&S professionals and accountability for budgets, contractors and cross-functional programs.
- Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Management or a related discipline; equivalent experience will be considered.
- Professional designation or eligibility (e.g., CRSP, CSP, EP) is required or preferred.
- Strong knowledge of applicable health, safety and environmental legislation and regulatory requirements in Alberta and British Columbia.
- Demonstrated experience with H&S management systems, incident investigation and root cause analysis, audit and assurance processes, emergency management, regulatory compliance, and contractor safety.
- Incident Command System (ICS) certification (100, 200, 300) is considered an asset.
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to field locations, including remote sites, as required.
Our candidate will also have…
- Strong knowledge of Canadian and provincial health, safety and environmental regulations, with the ability to interpret requirements and apply them in operational settings.
- Proficient in hazard identification, job safety analysis, critical control management and risk-based decision-making.
- Experience conducting incident investigations, root cause analysis and developing effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Ability to analyze H&S data, audits, inspections and trends to generate insights, metrics and decision-support reporting.
- Experience developing and implementing health and safety programs, including industrial hygiene, occupational health, SIF prevention and high-risk work controls.
- Knowledge of emergency preparedness, response frameworks and business continuity planning.
- Experience managing contractor safety, including prequalification, onboarding, oversight and performance evaluation.
- Ability to develop competency frameworks, training programs and field verification processes, and to communicate clearly with field teams, leadership and regulators.
