Zurich Canada is currently looking for a Director, Middle Markets, Prairies to lead our Alberta Middle Markets business and drive profitable growth across the region.

Reporting to the Vice President, Middle Markets, Western Region, you will be responsible for executing regional business strategy, strengthening broker relationships, developing underwriting talent, and building a profitable portfolio. This role offers the opportunity to help shape Zurich's continued investment in the Middle Market segment while supporting future growth opportunities across the region.

What you will do

  • Lead the profitable growth and performance of Zurich's Middle Markets portfolio across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
  • Execute regional business strategies aligned with Zurich Canada's commercial insurance objectives.
  • Strengthen relationships with key broker partners, with particular focus on strategic broker engagement and long-term growth opportunities.
  • Drive market visibility and expand Zurich's position across target industries and customer segments.
  • Lead underwriting execution and portfolio management to ensure disciplined, profitable growth.
  • Develop, coach, and inspire underwriters while building future leadership capability and organizational bench strength.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, technical excellence, and customer focus.
  • Improve service responsiveness and execution to deliver a differentiated broker and customer experience.
  • Partner with underwriting teams to ensure strategic accounts receive timely and effective service.
  • Collaborate across National Accounts, Financial Lines, and other business units to identify cross-selling opportunities and deliver integrated client solutions.
  • Monitor portfolio performance, market trends, and underwriting results to ensure sustainable growth and strong financial outcomes.
  • Champion Zurich's strong underwriting, sales, and service culture while supporting change initiatives and continuous improvement efforts.

What you bring to the table

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent and 10+ years of experience in Commercial Property & Casualty insurance, including underwriting, market-facing, portfolio management, or commercial insurance leadership roles.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing high-performing underwriting teams.
  • Proven success delivering profitable growth through disciplined portfolio management and broker engagement.
  • Strong strategic thinking, business planning, and execution capabilities.
  • Deep knowledge of commercial underwriting principles, risk assessment, and portfolio management.
  • Exceptional relationship-building, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to influence across teams and lead through change in a fast-paced market environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of Middle Market Property & Casualty insurance.
  • Established broker relationships across Alberta and the Western Canadian marketplace.
  • Experience leading geographically dispersed teams.
  • Professional insurance designation (CIP, FCIP, CRM, or equivalent).
  • Experience collaborating across multiple commercial insurance business units to drive growth and client outcomes.

Compensation

At Zurich Canada, we are committed to pay equity. We determine compensation based on objective criteria such as skills, experience, and internal equity. The salary range for this position is $150,000- $200,000 CAD.
