Job Title: Sr. Mechanical Designer Job Description
The Sr. Mechanical Designer is responsible for the design and development of custom automation equipment from concept through commissioning. This role leads mechanical design activities on assigned projects, collaborates closely with engineering, manufacturing, and project teams, and provides technical direction to junior designers to ensure high-quality project execution.
Responsibilities
- Lead the mechanical design of custom automation equipment from concept development through final release.
- Create and maintain 3D models, detailed drawings, assemblies, and bills of materials using SolidWorks.
- Develop innovative and cost-effective design solutions that meet customer requirements, project schedules, and manufacturing objectives.
- Participate in design reviews and identify opportunities to improve performance, reliability, manufacturability, and cost.
- Lead mechanical design activities on assigned projects and coordinate deliverables to meet project milestones.
- Provide technical direction to junior designers, review designs, and support the successful execution of project deliverables.
- Collaborate with controls, electrical, manufacturing, purchasing, and project management teams throughout the project lifecycle.
- Support equipment assembly, testing, troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning activities as required.
- Work with vendors and suppliers to select components and resolve technical issues.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable safety standards, customer specifications, and internal engineering practices.
- Maintain accurate engineering documentation, drawing packages, and revision control.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of design standards, tools, and best practices.
Essential Skills
- Expert level of proficiency with SolidWorks and AutoCAD, PDM, and TotalETO.
- 8+ years experience designing custom automated equipment for the life sciences, consumer goods, or food industries.
- Proven history of leading projects and directing junior designers.
- Experience in high-speed automation, preferably in the Medical Device, Pharmaceutical, food, consumer product, or broader Life Sciences industry.
- Proficient with sanitary design requirements, material selection, tolerance stack up, and component selection based on functional design needs and requirements.
- Knowledgeable of machine safety risk assessments and standards (CSA/CE, ANSI/RIA, OSHA).
- Ability to work independently and execute responsibilities with minor supervision.
- Working knowledge and practical application of project management planning methodologies.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 10+ years of mechanical design experience designing custom automation systems, with a track record of delivering complex projects from concept to FAT/SAT acceptance.

Flexible depending on candidate; ideal candidates will be able to work onsite in London (either full-time or hybrid). Open to remote for the right candidates.

This is a Contract position based out of London, ON.
Pay And Benefits
The pay range for this position is $50.00 - $74.00/hr.
Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
