Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Mortgage Originations, the Underwriter is responsible for recommending customer’s mortgage applications. Including in-depth analysis of document review and managing loan from application to completion stage.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Effective “pipeline management” to ensure documentation is received on time.
  • Assesses up to 4 mortgage applications per day. Evaluating broker’s documentation and recommending/approving mortgage applications by assessing the 5 C’s of credit including credit, capacity, capital, character and collateral within established HTB guidelines.
  • Fulfills all conditions required and communicates remaining conditions with the brokers within SLA.
  • Provides excellent customer service, including efficient turnaround time to brokers, while building and maintaining positive working relationships.
  • Works in collaboration with the Originations unit to ensure targets are being met and exceeded.
  • Stays informed of the latest industry knowledge including: B20, AML (Anti-Money Laundering) and KYC (Know Your Customer) legislation.

Qualifications & Experience

Degrees, Diplomas & Certifications:

  • The position requires a university degree or equivalent experience.

Years and Range of Experience Required to Perform the Job:

  • The position requires at least 3 years experience underwriting in the residential mortgage lending industry, preferably in the “Near prime and Alt B” business.
  • A strong understanding of residential mortgage review, regulatory legislation (B20, AML and KYC) and the proven ability to make sound underwriting decisions.
  • Proven ability to clearly communicate with mortgage brokers; maintain successful relationships that include negotiation and sales skills.
  • Strong organization, time management and multi-tasking skills.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, underwriting and servicing software platforms or Delta 360.
  • Bilingual in French is an asset
