Be the physician voice at the heart of Canada's medical standards.

Reporting to the CEO, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is MCC's senior physician leader, the chief physician strategist defining what it means to be ready to practice medicine in Canada. You'll safeguard the medical integrity of MCC's approach to assessment and serve as the senior integrator of physician advice across the organization.

With delegated authority from the CEO, you'll provide authoritative medical advice on clinical standards, physician readiness, and assessment judgment, representing MCC as a senior physician voice with regulators, colleges, faculties of medicine, and national and international partners.

You'll also provide functional leadership to Senior Medical Advisors and physician subject-matter experts, aligning their counsel on priorities like digital and AI, regulation, government relations, and international medical graduates.

As a member of the Executive Team, you'll bring a physician and clinical lens to enterprise decisions, working most closely with the Executive Director, Assessment. Operational and people leadership remain with the CEO and executive leaders, this role is about clinical and academic alignment at the highest level.

What You’ll Do

• Define and maintain MCC's physician perspective on readiness to practice, and the standards that support it.
• Provide expert clinical judgment on competency, assessment philosophy, and defensibility, so that MCC's positions hold up publicly and with regulators.
• Contribute the clinical and standards lens to credentialing approaches, such as substantial equivalency.
• Advise the CEO and governance on clinical risk and emerging standards issues.
• Provide strategical medical leadership and expert clinical judgement to inform the design, blueprint, and evolution of assessment programs.
• Provide expert physician advice to ensure the physician voice informs assessment strategy, without assuming operational management or line authority.
• Represent MCC, when delegated by the CEO and within priorities agreed with the CEO, as a senior physician voice with governments, regulators, faculties of medicine, and other national and international partners on matters related to clinical standards, physician readiness, assessment, regulation, and broader health-system priorities.
• Contributes MCC's independent physician perspective to national and international bodies shaping assessment and standards.
• Provide strategic medical leadership for MCC's scholarship, including research and academic presentations.
• Provide strategic oversight for MCC’s national assessment meeting to position MCC as a convener of the field.
• Act as a trusted peer and sounding board to the CEO on matters requiring senior physician perspective and judgment.
• Provide steady physician counsel on complex and sensitive issues at the intersection of medicine, regulation, and assessment.

Experience

What you need to succeed

• Minimum 10 years of senior leadership experience in medical regulation, certification, assessment, academic medicine, health systems, or related environments.
• Deep credibility on physician competency, standards, and assessment, with the standing to represent MCC to regulators and academic medicine as a peer.
• A record of scholarship in assessment or a related field, including research and academic presentation.
• Experience contributing a clinical and standards lens to complex, high-stakes decisions.
• Demonstrated success leading through influence and working in partnership with executives.

Technical Skills

• Advanced understanding of physician competency frameworks, assessment science, and regulatory principles.
• Sound grasp of executive decision making, risk management, and governance in complex, high-stakes environments.
• Working knowledge of the national and international standards landscape and the role of innovation in assessment.

Education

• Medical degree (MD)

Asset

• Graduate qualifications in areas such as business, education, health policy, or leadership
• Specialty certification (for example, FRCPC or CCFP)

Language

• Advanced oral and written skills in English are required, with oral and written skills in French considered an asset.
