Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $70,073.00 - $87,591.00 (commensurate with experience)

The Role

Job Title: Commercial Analyst (1 year Contract)

Location: Hybrid option available - weekly in office expectation at one of our administration locations (Strathroy or Sarnia).

Preferred Qualification: Agricultural lending experience is considered a strong asset. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in farm lending, including agricultural construction and farm credit analysis.

The Commercial Analyst supports the growth, quality and risk management of Mainstreet Credit Union’s commercial and agricultural lending portfolio through credit analysis, underwriting, annual reviews, portfolio monitoring and credit-administration activities.

Working closely with Commercial and Business Experience Teams, Commercial Lending Administration and Credit Risk, the role prepares and analyzes credit applications, assesses financial performance and repayment capacity, identifies material credit risks and develops clear credit recommendations that align with Mainstreet’s credit policies, delegated authorities, risk appetite and regulatory requirements.

The Commercial Analyst contributes to portfolio quality by completing timely annual reviews, monitoring assigned credit relationships, escalating emerging concerns and maintaining accurate, complete and audit-ready credit files.

The role reports to the Commercial Lending Manager and receives functional technical direction from the Senior Commercial Analyst on underwriting standards, transaction structure and complex credit matters.

Major Duties and ResponsibilitiesUnderwriting and Credit Analysis

  • Work collaboratively with Relationship Managers to understand member needs and develop credit recommendations that appropriately balance those needs with repayment capacity, policy requirements and Mainstreet’s risk appetite.
  • Prepare and analyze commercial and agricultural credit applications and recommend appropriate transaction structures in alignment with credit policy, delegated authorities and risk appetite.
  • Conduct financial statement reviews, cash flow analysis, ratio interpretation, and collateral assessments.
  • Analyze financial and personal net worth statements, including debt servicing, working capital, leverage, liquidity, and repayment capacity.
  • Evaluate appraisals, environmental reports, insurance requirements and other supporting documentation as required.
  • Identify key risks, mitigating factors, and monitoring requirements within credit applications and annual reviews.
  • Consult the Senior Commercial Analyst on complex structures, material new-money requests, policy exceptions, higher-risk transactions and matters outside the analyst’s technical expertise.
  • Ensure credit recommendations clearly identify repayment sources, key risks, mitigating factors, proposed conditions, covenants, security requirements and ongoing monitoring expectations
  • Present assigned credit applications and annual reviews at Credit Committee or other adjudication forums, where required.

Portfolio Monitoring and Annual Reviews

  • Complete assigned annual credit reviews within established timelines, ensuring accurate financial analysis, appropriate risk assessment and clear recommendations
  • Assess changes in borrower financial condition, repayment capacity, collateral coverage, covenant compliance, and overall account performance.
  • Monitor assigned credit relationships for emerging risks, covenant breaches, reporting deficiencies, deteriorating performance and other early-warning indicators.
  • Assist in identifying accounts requiring enhanced monitoring, updated risk ratings, or Watchlist consideration.
  • Maintain accurate financial information, borrower data, covenant tracking and annual review records within internal systems.
  • Support risk mitigation plans in collaboration with Experience Team and senior credit staff.
  • Escalate material deterioration, covenant breaches, delinquency, risk-rating concerns and other adverse developments on a timely basis.
  • Recommend changes to borrower risk ratings based on financial performance, account conduct and identified risk factors.

Risk Management Support

  • Apply sound underwriting principles and credit judgement to support consistent commercial credit decision making.
  • Identify and escalate policy exceptions, structural weaknesses, emerging risks and information gaps within credit submissions.
  • Ensure proposed credit structures and recommendations remain within approved policy, delegated authorities and risk appetite.
  • Support the timely identification and escalation of credit concerns, policy exceptions, and emerging risks.
  • Support the Senior Commercial Analyst and Director of Credit Risk with analysis of complex, exception-based or higher-risk transactions.
  • Contribute to a culture of constructive challenge, sound credit judgment and consistent application of commercial-credit standards.

Operational and Administrative Support

  • Assist with follow-up on outstanding financial reporting, documentation, and information required for underwriting or annual reviews.
  • Ensure all loan files and credit documentation are complete, accurate, and audit ready.
  • Work with Commercial Lending Administration to maintain document controls and support portfolio reporting requirements.
  • Assist in responding to file reviews, audits, and quality assurance activities and support remediation of identified deficiencies.
  • Support the consistent application of commercial lending procedures, templates, and job aids.
  • Contribute to process improvements that enhance operational efficiency, data quality, annual review completion, and portfolio oversight.
  • Support the use of lending systems, reports, and technologies that improve underwriting quality and workflow effectiveness.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma in Business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field; or equivalent working experience
  • 3 - 4 years of experience in commercial/agricultural lending, credit analysis, or related financial services roles.,
  • Strong understanding of commercial credit underwriting, financial analysis, collateral evaluation, and risk assessment
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial statements and identify trends and assess credit risk.
  • Working knowledge of commercial lending processes, credit policy, delegated authorities and regulatory expectations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, financial analysis tools, loan origination systems, and relevant lending reports.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of clear and concise credit presentations and file documentation.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment while maintaining a high degree of accuracy and professionalism
