Minor Official and Scorekeeper

Location: Regina, SK (In-Person)

Hours: One evening a week through the season, about two hours.

Pay: $17 an hour

The minor official runs the clock and keeps the score sheet at the scorer's table on a league night. It is the easiest way into working in the gym, it pays $17 an hour, and you can learn it in one evening.

HoopLife Basketball runs the HoopLife Centre at 661 Solomon Cres in Regina: weekly skills sessions, the HoopLife League, camps through every school break, open gym, and Young Stars for our youngest players. We also run basketball clinics for communities right across Canada. Everything we do is built to make a young player more confident, on the floor and off it.

What you would do

• Run the game clock and the shot clock.
• Keep the score sheet: baskets, fouls and the running score.
• Set the clock for each block of the night, which we give you on one sheet.
• Work with the referees and tell them what they need to know.

Who this suits

• Students looking for a first job, including high school students.
• Anybody who wants a couple of steady hours a week in a gym.
• People who know basketball but do not want to officiate.

What you get

• A printed sheet for the night with exactly what to set the clock to and when.
• Training on your first evening, beside somebody who has done it.
• A straightforward two hours, same night every week.

Questions people ask

Do I need experience?

No. We train you on your first evening and you have a sheet in front of you telling you what to set the clock to for every part of the night.

How old do you have to be?

Sixteen and up. This is a good first job.

What does it pay?

$17 an hour.

Is scorekeeper the same job as minor official?

Yes. At HoopLife one person keeps the score sheet and runs the clock, and we call that the minor official.

We signed up our 8-year-old son for the 3-month membership and have really enjoyed our experience. Logistically, I like that all the sessions are laid out in advance, so you can choose what works best for your schedule. It was a great experience for our son to have different coaches and play with different kids regularly. He really enjoyed the coaches! They were friendly, knowledgeable and really helped him to improve his skills. The facility itself is fantastic, and we're glad we gave this a shot!
