Position Summary

The Financial Controller is responsible for overseeing the company’s accounting and financial operations, ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, effective cash flow management, and compliance with applicable financial and regulatory requirements.

This position provides leadership to the accounting team and works closely with executive leadership, department managers, and Project Managers to provide meaningful financial information, improve operational efficiencies, manage costs, and support the overall profitability and growth of the company.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

• Plan, direct, and coordinate the company’s accounting and financial operations.
• Develop, maintain, and improve financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
• Prepare, analyze, and present monthly financial reporting packages, including Profit & Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, and Cash Flow Statements, to executive leadership.
• Lead and accelerate the month-end and year-end closing processes, ensuring financial statements are completed accurately and on time.
• Perform variance analysis, including actual results compared to budget, and work with department leaders to understand variances and manage costs.
• Identify opportunities to improve efficiencies, strengthen financial controls, reduce costs, and improve profitability across the organization.
• Protect the company by maintaining the confidentiality of financial information, business plans, and other sensitive information.

Cash Flow, Accounting & Operational Oversight

• Monitor daily cash flow and maintain rolling cash flow forecasts.
• Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, payroll, cost management, inventory management, and general accounting functions.
• Review and approve daily and weekly transaction batches, vendor payments, and client invoices processed by accounting staff.
• Oversee corporate credit card programs and employee expense management.
• Act as the final escalation point for complex billing, vendor, and customer account discrepancies.
• Work closely with Project Managers on job costing, project financial performance, and profitability.
• Oversee insurance and risk management policies and related financial requirements.

Accounting Team Leadership

• Supervise, mentor, and develop the accounting team.
• Establish and monitor clear performance expectations, workflows, responsibilities, and deadlines for accounting staff.
• Review team processes and workloads to identify opportunities for improved efficiency, accuracy, and accountability.
• Provide ongoing support and guidance while ensuring established financial procedures and deadlines are consistently followed.

Systems & Process Improvement

• Act as the primary administrator for QuickBooks and ensure the accounting system is structured effectively for the needs of the business.
• Evaluate, implement, and maintain integrations between QuickBooks and other business systems, including payroll, expense management, inventory, and other financial applications.
• Identify opportunities to automate manual accounting processes and improve the accuracy and efficiency of financial operations.
• Evaluate existing accounting procedures and implement improvements as the company grows and its financial needs evolve.

Compliance, Tax & External Reporting

• Ensure compliance with applicable statutory requirements, financial regulations, tax obligations, and corporate reporting requirements.
• Coordinate with external CPAs and other professional advisors for annual tax preparation, year-end reporting, and external audits or reviews.
• Maintain accurate financial records and supporting documentation in accordance with applicable accounting standards and company policies.
• Support external reporting, insurance, banking, audit, and regulatory requirements as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

• Minimum 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 1–2 years in a supervisory or management position, such as Controller, Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or a comparable role.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.
• CPA or CMA designation is considered an asset.
• Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks is required.
• Experience with integrated accounting and financial tools.
• Experience working in a mid-sized, growing organization is strongly preferred.
• Experience with job costing and project-based accounting is considered a strong asset.
• Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, internal controls, and financial compliance.
