The Medical Lab Assistant is responsible for receiving, processing, and shipping research specimens while maintaining laboratory inventory and equipment. They also assist Medical Laboratory Technologists and Research Specialists with various laboratory tasks and study-related communications.

Research MLA role.

Under supervision and direction, responsible for receiving, handling and oversight of specimen for Research (submitted by Research study teams) that require sample processing and shipping to various central labs.

Performs a variety of laboratory tasks, including but not exclusive to: specimen receiving, sorting and labeling, data entry, specimen separation and preparation, organizing and tracking of all samples/inventory for studies, contribution to Research SOP creation, within-scope quality assurance practices, loading of analyzers and equipment maintenance, which require learned manual skills rather than a technological training.

Assists the Medical Laboratory Technologists and Research Specialist within the Laboratory Medicine program.

Communication with Research study teams related to specimen reception, processing and shipping.

Grade 12 education or recognized equivalent 2.

OSMT or CSMLS Certification as a Medical Laboratory Assistant 3.

Recent (minimum 3 years) experience in Core laboratory with supporting Research studies 4.

Experience in receiving and handling Laboratory Specimens 5.

Experience in venous and capillary blood collection for pediatrics and infants as necessary 6.

Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) trained 7.

Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a team environment 8.

Knowledge of Epic computer system and data entry skills preferred

Requirements

Candidates must hold a Grade 12 education and possess OSMT or CSMLS certification as a Medical Laboratory Assistant. A minimum of three years of core laboratory experience and training in the Transportation of Dangerous Goods are required.
