Team Lead, Operating Room at Schroeder Ambulatory Centre
Reporting to the Manager of the Operating Room and POAC, the Team Leader provides daily operational coordination and expert clinical support to the orthopedic Operating Room team. The role supports safe, high-quality care, efficient patient flow, staff development, and resource readiness within the ambulatory surgical setting.
Staff scheduling, staffing assignments, and formal performance management remain the responsibility of the Manager. The Team Leader identifies needs, provides recommendations, and supports approved changes.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Review the surgical schedule to identify readiness concerns, resource needs, and potential delays.
- Communicate concerns and support approved changes.
- Coordinate with PSWs and EVS to support room readiness and timely turnover.
- Conduct daily OR rounds to identify clinical concerns, operational barriers, and staff support needs. Resolve issues within the role’s authority and escalate concerns promptly.
Credentialing and Medical Staff Administration
- Lead and manage physician credentialing, appointments, reappointments, privilege changes, and related Medical Staff processes.
- Conduct quality review of credentialing and privileging files to ensure readiness for Medical Staff leadership, MAC, and Board approval.
- Interpret and apply Medical Staff policies/procedures, organizational requirements, and regulatory standards, identifying risks or exceptions for escalation.
- Identify and implement improvements to strengthen credentialing processes, efficiency, compliance, and physician experience.
- Serve as an expert resource in orthopedic perioperative care. Support clinical decision-making, respond to urgent concerns, and activate escalation or emergency procedures when required.
- Promote respectful communication and teamwork. Address day-to-day concerns and refer unresolved conflicts to the Manager.
- Communicate unexpected absences and attendance concerns to the Manager for coverage arrangements and appropriate follow-up.
- Collaborate with the Clinical Nurse Educator to identify learning needs and support education, competency development, and new equipment, procedures, and practices.
- Support new staff orientation through collaboration with preceptors and mentors. Monitor progress and share feedback with the Manager and Clinical Nurse Educator.
- Coordinate with MDRD, supply chain, vendors, pharmacy, diagnostic imaging, and other supporting services to ensure required instruments, implants, supplies, medications, and equipment are available.
- Verify completion of equipment and environmental readiness checks, including emergency equipment and supply carts. Arrange follow-up for deficiencies and report equipment requiring repair or replacement.
- Identify resource gaps and recommend improvements that support safety, standardization, and responsible resource use. Support updates to orthopedic preference cards and clinical resources.
- Reinforce SAC policies, infection prevention and control practices, and professional practice standards.
- Address unsafe practices within the role’s authority and escalate concerns.
- Participate in incident reviews, safety audits, and quality improvement activities. Identify trends, recommend changes, and help evaluate improvements.
- Support departmental priorities, committees, and special projects as assigned. Duties and responsibilities may be adjusted to reflect departmental needs, operational priorities, and the scope of the role.
People Responsibilities
- No formal managerial accountability. Provide clinical guidance, coaching, and feedback as described above; refer formal employee performance and disciplinary matters to the Manager.
Financial & Budgetary Accountability
- Recommend supplies and equipment based on clinical needs and responsible resource use. Make purchases only with approval and within established guidelines.
Corporate Responsibilities
- Complete mandatory training and maintain role-specific competencies.
- Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations, SAC policies and procedures, and established professional and industry guidelines.
Skills & Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved baccalaureate nursing program or equivalent experience.
- Current registration as a Registered Nurse with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
- Operating Room certificate.
- Minimum of five years of recent Operating Room experience. Operating Room leadership experience preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge and competence in orthopedic surgery, including total joint replacement.
- Expertise in orthopedic instrumentation and specialized equipment, including robotics.
- Knowledge of ORNAC standards of practice.
- Current BCLS certification.
- Strong clinical judgment, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to coach and support staff, work collaboratively, and prioritize competing demands with minimal supervision.
- Ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe, and experience with electronic health records such as MEDITECH.
- Satisfactory criminal record/vulnerable sector check and proof of immunization and TB records.
