About The Opportunity

The Senior Technologist for Applied Chemistry Services is an opportunity to be part of a professional, purpose-driven team that values collaboration, innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement. Most importantly, your work will contribute to meaningful outcomes that make a difference for Albertans and help shape the future of our province.

This position will support hydrogen quality testing and research and fugitive emissions monitoring projects, through the analysis of various gas samples, and the development and validation of new methods and instruments. The role provides technical leadership in laboratory operations, quality management, safety, project delivery, and mentorship of fellow technologists.

Key Responsibilities In The Role Of Senior Technologist Include

Technical Leadership

  • Perform full-specification analysis of hydrogen gas to ISO 14687 and SAE J2719.
  • Operate, maintain, test, calibrate, troubleshoot and repair gas chromatographs with multiple detectors (e.g., TCD, PDHID, FID, SCD), FTIR and other spectroscopic instruments.
  • Research, compare and recommend new analytical methods, and develop and validate methods for gas-phase impurities.
  • Design and assemble custom analytical instruments and novel experimental setups.
  • Prepare and verify calibration gas standards using certified reference materials.
  • Interpret QC results, and perform troubleshooting and root cause analysis.
  • Collect, compile and record analytical data using lab notebooks, log books and the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on instrumentation.
  • Occasionally collect field samples at client sites.
  • Lead processes to improve laboratory efficiency and quality, and keep up to date with technical advances in gas analysis and hydrogen quality standards.

Project Support

  • Provide input on own availability and workload, and on the availability of equipment, consumables and lab staff.
  • Help review and prepare project proposals and cost quotations.
  • Make sure own work meets agreed technical outcomes and timelines, and identify and solve technical problems that may affect the project schedule.

Quality and Safety

  • Work within the lab's ISO/IEC 17025 quality management system, including method validation, measurement uncertainty, proficiency testing, and internal and external audits.
  • Prepare SOPs, make sure staff follow SOPs and QA/QC procedures, and train staff on SOP and protocol changes.
  • Advise management on quality issues.
  • Lead hazard assessments for hydrogen and other compressed-gas tasks.
  • Handle, store and dispose of compressed gases, chemicals and waste materials.
  • Maintain lab organization and take a leadership role in housekeeping and safe work practices.
  • Lead the response to, and implementation of, corrective actions from safety audits and quality system operation.

Client and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Communicate regularly with internal and external clients about sampling, procedures, test results and conformance to specification.
  • Act as a contact for existing clients, provide business leads and actively seek new clients.
  • Promote HQC technical expertise and services within the organization, and create and support proposals.
  • Take part in technical project meetings and follow up on action items.

Mentorship

  • Act as a role model and mentor to fellow technologists by showing technical excellence, attention to detail and strict adherence to the QMS.
  • Train and give technical guidance to technologists and students on HQC methods and instruments.

What You Need to Thrive in This Role

  • 2-year Technical Diploma in chemical or chemical engineering technology or a related field, or a BSc in chemistry, chemical engineering or a related field (BSc or higher preferred)
  • Minimum 9 years of related technical experience with a diploma, or 7 years with a BSc or higher
  • Experience with trace-level gas analysis by GC and FTIR, including setting up data processing methods
  • General competency in spectroscopic techniques and the principles behind them
  • Experience safely handling compressed and high-pressure gases
  • In-depth understanding of an ISO/IEC 17025 quality management system
  • Proficient in use of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
  • Experience with ISO 14687 / SAE J2719 testing, method development and validation, or building custom analytical instruments is an asset
  • P.Chem (ACPA) or C.Tech / C.E.T. designation is an asset
  • Able to travel occasionally to client sites
  • Curious, collaborative and solution-focused; able to work independently and as part of a team
