Electrical Designer at SABRE LTD
Electrical Designers at Sabre turn customer concepts and requirements into innovative, high-quality electrical designs that prioritize safety and meet or exceed applicable standards and project specifications. Working closely with our skilled project management team, operations, mechanical designers, engineers, customers, and suppliers, they develop electrical concepts, select components, and produce detailed drawing packages that guide each project from initial concept through customer approval, manufacturing, and final as-built documentation. Safety, quality, and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do at Sabre.
Electrical Design Scope
The Electrical Designer is responsible for defining electrical design requirements, selecting and specifying purchased components, preparing bills of materials (BOMs), and producing electrical drawings and design packages.
This is a collaborative, iterative process involving ongoing communication and coordination between Electrical Design, Mechanical Design, Project Management, and Operations. Requirements, concepts, and design details are shared, reviewed, and refined throughout the project to address constraints, resolve conflicts, and ensure the electrical and physical designs work together effectively.
Electrical Designers communicate equipment requirements and design intent to the Mechanical Design team, who develop the physical construction of the switchgear, including enclosures, fabricated components, and mechanical arrangements. As the design progresses, feedback from each discipline informs further revisions and refinements, ensuring the final product meets or exceeds customer requirements, project specifications, and manufacturing needs.
As An Electrical Designer At Sabre, You Will
- Develop electrical designs and drawings for custom low- and medium-voltage (LV/MV) switchgear, including single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, wiring diagrams, and general arrangement (GA) drawings.
- Translate customer requirements into practical solutions by reviewing specifications, clarifying technical requirements, and ensuring designs meet application and site needs.
- Select and specify electrical components, including circuit breakers, disconnect switches, protective relays, instrument transformers, meters, and control devices.
- Develop protection and control designs that incorporate breaker control, tripping and closing circuits, interlocking, metering, alarms, and external interfaces as required by the project.
- Create and maintain bills of materials (BOMs) based on customer requirements, selected components, and approved designs.
- Collaborate with mechanical designers to communicate electrical requirements, equipment layouts, component locations, and general arrangement concepts for physical product development.
- Coordinate with customers, engineers, suppliers, and production teams to resolve design questions, address technical constraints, and support successful project delivery.
- Prepare drawing packages for customer approval and manufacturing, incorporating revisions and maintaining accurate as-built documentation.
- Apply applicable industry codes and standards, along with Sabre’s established Quality Management System (QMS) procedures, throughout the design process to ensure compliance, consistency, and quality.
- Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement, sharing technical knowledge and supporting junior team members.
- Work closely with Project Management and Operations, providing reciprocal support and guidance while coordinating with customers, engineers, suppliers, and production teams to resolve design questions, address technical constraints, and support successful project delivery.
Qualifications
- Experience in electrical design or drafting, preferably involving LV/MV switchgear or power distribution equipment.
- Ability to interpret customer specifications, electrical drawings, vendor documentation, and applicable codes.
- Knowledge of electrical component selection and integration.
- Experience developing single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, and general arrangement drawings.
- Familiarity with protection and control systems, including protective relays, breaker control circuits, interlocking, metering, and alarms.
- Ability to prepare and maintain bills of materials and technical drawing packages.
- Familiarity with applicable standards and regulations, including NEC, UL, CEC, CSA, ESA, IEEE, and ANSI, as relevant to the project.
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Basic relay programming or configuration knowledge is an asset.
- Education: Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology from a recognized institution preferred. We are seeking an intermediate to senior-level candidate but will consider applicants with less experience who demonstrate the right skills, aptitude, and potential.
