Summary

Supports the operations and maintenance of the Waterloo Region P25 Radio Network in conjunction with the Radio Systems Branch staff and all WRPS and external stakeholders. Provides technical guidance, and supports the daily operations of the Waterloo Region P25 Radio Network. Is conversant with public-safety land mobile radio networks (Motorola ASTRO25 preferred) and their infrastructure, network topology and end-user devices.


You Will:

  • Coordinates and executes the daily system administration of the Waterloo Region P25 Radio Network for all system users and public safety users.
  • Receives and responds to general enquiries for the branch. Technical matters are triaged and forwarded to senior technical staff when required.
  • Receives, acknowledges. logs and routes requests from internal WRPS members, WRPS Service Desk and external partner agencies.
  • Creates, tracks, updates, forwards and reports on work orders.
  • Reports on service levels for the branch.
  • Provides detailed reports on KPIs from system infrastructure such as KMF, PM, Genesis and NICHE.
  • Able to navigate and extract voice logging recordings for distribution to authorized parties.
  • Safeguards all physical and electronic confidential and proprietary organizational and/or system information such as passwords, keys, locations, addresses, etc.
  • Creates and maintains an up-to-date catalogue of commonly sourced commodities and pricing.
  • Maintains routine correspondence with 3rd party vendors and service contractors or providers.
  • Assists with contract management, monitoring terms, milestones, warranty, payments and renewals.


You Have:

  • Minimum completion of a two (2) year College Diploma in Electronics or Computer Engineering, or and demonstrated proof of specialized training in the field of Radio Maintenance or Repair, or Wireless Communications related to terrestrial land-mobile radio networks.
  • Three (3) years experience, working in an administrative capacity, within a radio service facility for commercial land mobile radio equipment. Prior military service in electronics or radio maintenance to be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated progressive knowledge of workings and administering Motorola P25 radio systems, planning and managing maintenance programs, and coordinating radio repairs from the system to subscriber radio level which includes experience and working with software and hardware used in networking and radio systems.
  • Knowledge of common radio test and programming equipment such as communication service monitors, service utility programs, watt-meters, oscilloscopes, multi-meters, and radio programming software.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of APCO P25 trunking radio system architecture, and Internet Protocol (IP) networking.
  • Ability to review technical drawings such as block diagrams, schematics and floor plans.
  • Working knowledge of telecommunications sub-system components, base radios, repeaters, microwave equipment, dispatch computers, towers, consoles and related radio equipment including installation, programming, maintenance and repair of mobile and portable radio and mobile data devices.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail are required.
  • A valid Class G Ontario driver’s license with no more than six demerit points is required to travel within and outside of the Region and to drive a police vehicle.
  • Ability to meet police security clearance requirements and maintain confidentiality.

  • Able to apply well-defined guidelines and complete work in accordance with Waterloo Regional Police Service policies and procedures.
  • Able to provide input into policy development and work procedures in relation to the radio system.
  • Able to prioritize and organize daily activities according to established schedules and in adherence with procedures.
  • Continually contributes and participates in planned radio system enhancements and/or upgrades
  • Able report to report in progress and completed work to the Manager, of Radio Systems Branch.
  • Able to notify the supervisor of any changes which may impact the security of the systems or networks.
  • Able to act as the primary resource for radio system issues, and deal directly with system users and contractors in the field when troubleshooting.
  • Required to have visual concentration, mental effort, and attention to detail required for system troubleshooting, analysis, and bench and field testing.
  • Required to have manual finger dexterity to work on keyboards and other related computer hardware.
  • Able to meet testing requirements for the position.
