Safety Advisor

The responsibilities of this position may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Act as a health and safety leader for our clients and contractors on the worksite.
  • Build rapport and strong working relationships with site workers/supervisors, subcontractors and clients.
  • Follow and be an advocate for all rules, policies and procedures as per the client’s health and safety program, company-specific HSE program, and all other applicable legislation.
  • Be involved with site operations and planning to advocate safety in all aspect of operations.
  • Monitor worksite activities for compliance to OH&S standards and operational procedures and offer solutions to reach full compliance.
  • Intervene in unsafe acts and unsafe conditions and take appropriate action to influence safe behaviors and to create a safe working environment.
  • Audit worksites for non-compliance safety issues and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct and/or participate in accident investigations and provide input on how to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
  • Follow up on and track corrective actions stemming from incident investigations, audits, inspections and hazard reports.
  • Coordinate and play and active role in safety meetings.
  • Be adaptable to change and stay current with applicable legislation.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 7 years’ progressive/senior level Safety Advisor experience in the civil construction/plant industry;
  • Must have National Construction Safety Officer Certification (or similar designation);
  • Must have a strong understanding of Alberta OH&S legislation;
  • Must hold the following valid safety tickets: H2S Alive, Standard First Aid, Confined Space Entry/Monitor, and Ground Disturbance Level 2;
  • Must be willing to work a rotational schedule, be willing to travel and work outdoors;
  • Must hold a valid Driver's License and clean Driver's Abstract;
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills and communication skills;
  • Capable of working with limited supervision and able to exercise initiative and sound judgement.

Other Required Skills, Knowledge or Abilities: The Safety Manager must display a thorough understanding of all federal, province, local, company and client regulations. Must possess the ability to recognize hazardous situations and recommend corrective measures.

Interpersonal Communications: Good interpersonal and communications skills, including public speaking are required. Computer literacy must be sufficient to communicate effectively through emails and prepare written reports and summarize observations, prepare incident reports and statements, basic spreadsheets and presentations and time and expense reporting.

Physical Demands

This position requires a great deal of stamina with the ability to perform the above essential job functions under considerable pressure and within timetables. The position also requires working long hours from time-to-time as business necessitates.

Employee may be required to climb ladders, scaffolds and elevated platforms. The scope may require climbing access ladders on plant equipment to various heights. At times the employee will be required to enter various types of process areas where work is being performed. Work will occur on hard and uneven surfaces such as gravel and asphalt and cement. Where excavations are present soil conditions will be slippery at times and change as work progresses throughout the project. Work will occur in all weather conditions in an outdoor environment. Some projects require work at night.

Employee will be required to perform the scope of the assignment while wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment, including but not limited to flame retardant clothing, chemical suits, respirators, breathing air equipment, rescue harness, safety harness with lanyards, hardhats, and other equipment required for personal safety.

LIFTING: The employee must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Occasionally from floor-knuckle, knuckle-shoulder, and shoulder-overhead.

CARRYING: The employee must be able to carry up to 50 lbs. Occasionally for short distances (under 10 feet) and long (over 10 feet) distances.

PUSHING/PULLING: The employee must be able to push/pull up to 50 lbs.

FINE MOTOR COORDINATION: Excellent to nature of skill.

RANGE OF MOTION: Full range of motion required

BALANCE: Excellent balance having to climb/walk as long as fall restraint protection is provided.

VISION: Employee must have normal visual acuity, depth perception, color discrimination for hazardous materials areas when visiting jobsites and/or performing accident investigations. Corrective lenses, when approved must be suitable to industrial / chemical and refining facilities and be ANSI approved safety eyewear and be approved under the Client safety requirements.

HEARING: Sufficient hearing to hear warning signals and co-workers warning of high risks of objects falling and plant warning signs.

FITNESS FOR DUTY: All employees must pass a drug and alcohol (controlled substances) test, a comprehensive background check and a driving record check as a condition of employment.
