Duties:


Accountability #1: Demonstrates management excellence through the LEADS Based Sentinel Behaviours


  • The Royal is a LEADS based organization and it is expected that our leaders demonstrate the five capabilities of the LEADS in a Caring Environment through actions.

Lead Self:

  • Makes a disciplined effort to continuously be aware of one’s own assumptions, values, principles, strengths and limitations, and understand them in the context of a strategic role to connect managers with organizational priorities
  • Systematically employs personal mastery – either formally through a personal learning plan or informally to enhance interpersonal and strategic capabilities
  • Works in a manner that is conducive with staff and patient/client safety practices, policies and procedures of The Royal.

Engage Others:

  • Measures the quality of morale and productivity and ensures action is taken – with input from employees to improve morale and productivity
  • Listens and establishes strategic communications processes (using appropriate interpersonal communication, media and meetings) to elicit open exchanges of ideas, evidence and information
  • Provides materials and support for the creation and sustainability of high-performance teams in the work unit and at the senior management table
  • Ensure a work environment that is conducive to The Royal’s Anti-Racism, Harassment & Discrimination-Free Workplace policy.

Achieve Results:

  • Gains support of program leadership and staff for successful implementation of strategies, and for changes to those strategies when those changes are validated by new evidence
  • Holds self and others accountable for establishing outcome measures consistent with strategies, and for achievement of the targets the work unit is responsible for.

Develop Coalitions:

  • Actively supports and develops processes to involve, or seek input from clients, families, and staff when planning changes that may impact the stakeholder
  • Develops processes to encourage the gathering, interpretation, and dissemination of quality evidence and knowledge to influence the coalition

Systems Transformation:

  • Uses critical and systems thinking to identify issues and practices that could improve service
  • Supports an environment respective programs or departments where innovation, creativity and continuous improvement are valued
  • Encourages staff to think about trends, anticipate problems the respective program or department may face and create solutions in line with the values of organization and system


Accountability #2: Practice, Consultation, and Collaboration

  • Consult and collaborate with members of the health-care team across all programs to develop quality-improvement and risk-management strategies as well as provide support on clinical and professional practice issues.
  • Acts as a liaison and consultant to other health care organizations regarding patient care.
  • Collaborate with programs to facilitate the incorporation of current evidence-based practice into programming and treatment interventions.
  • Practice collaboratively and build effective coalitions and partnerships.


Accountability #3: Leadership

  • Demonstrate self-awareness, participate in professional development and exhibit character and behaviour that is aligned to the ethical principles of The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group.
  • Support the development and application of the vision for nursing practice within The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group.
  • Evaluate programs in the organization and the community and develop innovative approaches to complex care issues.
  • Identify problems and initiate change to address challenges at the clinical, organizational or system level.
  • Apply theories and principles of project and change management.
  • Participates and provides leadership on intra- and inter-disciplinary committees related to development of policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, standards, education and/or research.
  • Shares expertise and provides consultation beyond the boundaries of the organization into regional, provincial, national and international communities in areas of mental health and addictions.


Accountability #4: Research

  • Identify and implement research-based innovations for improving client care, organizations or systems.
  • Identify, appraise and apply research, practice guidelines, and current best practice.
  • Identify, conduct and support research within Inter-professional teams towards the enhancement of nursing practice, client outcomes and health-care delivery.
  • Evaluate current practice at individual and system levels in light of research findings.
  • Facilitate evidence-informed practice by acting as knowledge brokers for clinical nurses, other health-care providers and other stakeholders whose services impact the key determinants of health.


Accountability #5: Education

  • Plan, initiate, coordinate, implement, and evaluate educational programs based on organizational needs and priorities for staff, clients, and families.
  • Contribute to nursing and mental health care system by disseminating new knowledge through formal and informal forums (e.g., presentations, publications).
  • Identify the learning needs of nurses and other members of the healthcare team and find or develop programs and resources to meet those needs.
  • Contribute to, and advocate for, an organizational culture that supports professional growth, continuous learning and collaborative practice.
  • Build capacity and contribute to succession planning by mentoring RNs and registered psychiatric nurses to pursue graduate studies with a focus on acquiring APN competencies.


Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (or in progress) in Nursing or Education.
  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical experience in mental health and addictions.
  • Demonstrated leadership, program development, and education skills.
  • Experienced/Knowledgeable in research and evaluation principles.
  • Knowledgeable of computers including Office 365 (i.e., Word, Powerpoint, Excel), data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, NVIVO) and/or Graphic programs to develop education materials.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, critical thinking, and decision making skills.
  • Research, teaching and consulting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills – oral & written.
  • Proven ability in working effectively with all members of health care team.
  • Ability to determine feasibility of potential research, educational or clinical initiatives.
  • CPR certification within the last 12 months.
  • Knowledge of relevant health care legislation related to professional practice (e.g. Mental Health Act, Public Hospitals Act, Health Care Consent etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and documentation skills.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s license, access to a reliable car and willingness to travel between organizational sites on a regular basis.
  • English level A- is mandatory in oral expression, comprehension, reading and writing. Bilingual (French/English) level A- is considered an asset
