Job Description

The Cost Estimator is accountable for the preparation of labour and material estimates for new construction projects at Vancouver Shipyards. The Cost Estimator is a core member of the Estimating & Proposals team within the Program Management Office and supports Business Development and Strategy teams to prepare responses to bids/proposals and tender inquiries.

Note: This position qualifies for an optional hybrid work schedule after 90 days of onsite work and onboarding. Employee will be subject to the terms of the Flexible Work Policy Agreement.

What You’ll Do

  • Prepares detailed estimates for projects related to ship design, construction, maintenance and repair, upgrade, conversion and/or vessel life extension.
  • Prepares estimates based on accurate evaluations of requirements, contract terms and conditions, detailed or outline specifications, drawings, sketches, or following verbal instructions. This involves soliciting pricing from suppliers, advising shipyard personnel, subcontractors, trades, and applying general and specific knowledge of the work to be performed gained from experience and analysis, to determine labour and material requirements and calculate the overall costs for the project.
  • Monitors the cost of work and prepares analysis for the Estimating Manager.
  • Solicits bids for work to be subcontracted by distributing specifications and/or drawings, analyzing responses, and evaluating the best value options to support clear recommendations.
  • Provides management with summaries of complex estimates including overviews of work content, and risks and/or opportunities requiring special consideration.
  • Maintains positive relationships with stakeholders, ensuring that Management are kept informed of the progress of work.
  • Continuous improvement of Estimating processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What You’ll Bring

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma, in a relevant technical or business subject area.
  • 10 years of experience in the structured development of complex cost estimates, working in an engineering, manufacturing, shipbuilding or other similar environment.
  • Experience in the shipbuilding or ship repairs and conversions, considered a significant asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstration of exemplary business ethics, integrity, confidentiality, and honesty in all situations.
  • Excellent analytical, mathematical, problem solving, decision-making, negotiating, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to prepare accurate estimates. Ability to read technical drawings and interpret Contract and tender documentation requirements.
  • Knowledge of marine terminology and applicable rules and regulations in the marine industry are considered strong assets.
  • Able to obtain a security clearance up to NATO secret.
  • PC proficiency required. Solid understanding of basic Microsoft Office 2010 software suite (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project).
  • Advanced knowledge in MS Excel is required.

The estimated salary for this position is $99,000 - $115,000. In determining final salary, Seaspan considers many factors including the successful Candidate’s skillset and experience as well as position location and internal equity. The final base salary offer will be at the Company’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
