Mechanical Estimator
The Mechanical Estimator completes the estimating and tendering for process mechanical work and handles the purchasing of required materials and equipment.
How will you contribute to the team?
To perform this role successfully, the candidate will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Pre-planning of tender estimate
- Collecting pre-tender information including reviewing contract documents
- Generate detailed cost estimates encompassing labour, materials, equipment, general expenses, escalations, subcontractors including other direct and indirect costs
- Facilitate seamless collaboration among venders and all associated services to mitigate inadvertent overlaps in cost
- Attend site visits, tender review meetings and post tender discussions
- Review the tender document and submit Request for Information (RFI) for resolving any information gaps or ambiguities
- Preparing tender form and tender submission package
- Compiling the details of the project scope
- Estimate setup including area, phase and divisional breakdown as well as tender form mapping
- Preparing take-offs, measuring and calculating work item quantities
- Estimating labour hours based on take-offs, means and methods of construction
- Soliciting and assisting subcontractors and suppliers for bidding
- Acquire multiple quotations and effectively coordinate the scope of supply
- Preparing bid evaluation sheets for subcontractor and supplier quotes
- Preparing Lead Letters for Tender Submissions
- Preparing the bid submission package estimate and participating in the tender closing
- Performing follow-up process after tender closing
- Contributing to project implementation as required
- Break final estimates down into job budgets once the job is awarded
- Liase with site teams to facilitate labour and productivity tracking
- Handle the purchasing of materials and equipment as required
- Preparing preliminary estimates
- Prepare estimates for contemplated change orders or claims for on-going projects
- Keep the vendor list up to date in a timely manner
Education and Experience:
- Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or red seal tradesman.
- College courses related to estimating or construction.
- A minimum of 3 - 5 years of experience in estimating with Mechanical Contractors.
- Experience in Project Management, Construction Management, Cost Consulting, or direct field experience in construction of mechanical works is an asset.
- General estimating skills and knowledge in construction methodology, techniques and processes.
- Knowledge of system codes and related HVAC, Plumbing, Water and Waste Water Construction.
- Strong interpersonal skills including the ability to work in a team.
- Computer skills – spreadsheets, scheduling, construction related software.
- Organization skills – pre-planning, time management, documentation, managing multiple projects.
- Problem solving skills – responsiveness, inventiveness, competitiveness, ability to use good judgement, control under pressure.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Working Conditions:
- Office based position with some travel to job sites. When on site, personal protective equipment (i.e. hard hat, safety boots) required at all times.
