Location: Victoria, BC

Term: Full-time, permanent

Annual Salary Range: $95,930 - $159,000

Hybrid: Minimum two days (Wednesday, Thursday) per week in-office attendance required

Day in the life:

When you get to the office, you have a nice chat with coworkers before settling in for a day of meaningful work. You typically start with the basics – checking emails and Teams messages and reviewing your calendar. As a team of one, you have autonomy but also collaborate regularly with colleagues. Up first is a meeting with the Manager of Communications. We are launching a consumer education campaign and they want to run through the campaign components with you before the organization begins to actively promote itself (which could have some public relations impact).

Recent operational work resulted in a significant statutory decision and administrative penalty against a well-known business we license and regulate. Over the past few days, you’ve been working with the team responsible for making the decision, a colleague in sector relations and various members of the Leadership Team. You’ve been gathering their perspectives and discussing how the decision affects not only the business named, but also the local community and business industry. You’ve been adding in your areas of expertise – how your network of media contacts might elevate the story to achieve more awareness.

It's time to publish the decision and it’s up to you to post it on our website. You make sure employees are aware, have the messaging they need and know where to direct specific inquiries to. You proactively push the story out to the public through your media and consumer interest network.

After a nice social lunch and an espresso (coffee is on us!), you come back to your desk to find two media interview requests. You’re ready to respond and speak on behalf the organization with your messaging after informing Leadership.

Before heading out, you look at tomorrow’s calendar. You’ve got an introductory meeting with a public relations counterpart at another provincial regulator. It’s important to you to maintain relationships with a wide variety of contacts, including those in the media, other regulators, government, sector groups and your own public relations industry. Feeling prepared for the next day, you head home for the day feeling accomplished.

Who you are:

  • A team player, with the ability to work cooperatively with others to achieve group and organizational goals.
  • An excellent communicator who can respond calmly in a variety of situations, including time-critical or crisis situations with a public-facing component.
  • A highly organized, detail orientated, self-starter who thrives in a fluid environment and enjoys working both operationally and strategically.

What you will be doing:

  • Leading all media and public relations activities on behalf of the organization, including acting as the corporate spokesperson, preparing all background materials, monitoring and responding to media inquiries, writing media releases, key messages and public statements, and liaising regularly with leadership.
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues across the organization to ensure timely, audience-specific communications to regulated and licensed businesses, media partners and the general public.
  • Cultivating relationships with media, consumer interest groups and regulated sector groups.

We are looking for people who have:

  • Completion of post-secondary training in a related field (e.g., Public Relations, Communications) and/or several years related experience in a similar environment and/or a combination of formal training and experience.
  • Significant experience acting as a corporate spokesperson and participating in media interviews and presenting to internal and external audiences. You’ll have truly excellent communication skills.
  • Experience planning and implementing strategic public relations, interest holder engagement and media relations programs.

The application process:

  • The full application process will take approximately six weeks to complete.
  • Steps in the application process include application screening, telephone interview, in-person interview, professional references and a criminal record check (post offer).
  • We do not accept applications by email. We do not consider incomplete applications (those without cover letters, resumes and/or written responses to pre-screening questions).
