Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact
The technologist will support several service lines within the DAM department, with Rotating Machines being the primary line of business to start, with periodic reassignment as needed. The role is expected to involve significant field work in Canada and the US, along with laboratory work on campus at times.
- Perform laboratory and field inspections and diagnostic testing using predominantly standard techniques and processes. Complete test data sheets and other customized reports and equipment packing/shipping reports. Respond to customer inquiries, maintain good customer relations and solve problems generally of a routine nature.
- Perform high voltage and electrical diagnostic testing of electrical rotating machines; specifically related to testing of stator winding, stator core and rotor insulation systems. These tests are performed in accordance with established technical work instructions and industry consensus standards. Much of this work is performed at client sites and therefore travel is required. Maintain test equipment, instrumentation, control systems and facilities needed for the laboratory and field test sites.
- Perform client site walkdowns across North America for the purposes of data gathering involving accessing elevated structures such as wind towers, confined spaces in stations, recording and updating electrical schematics accordingly. The work may involve making updates to the protection relay equipment as well.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner in compliance with Kinectrics policies and procedures.
- Perform routine electrical tests, investigations, and technical studies for customers in one or more disciplines at client locations as well as Kinectrics facilities in accordance with prescribed technical procedures and Quality standards.
- Perform lab tests using predominantly standard techniques; provide support in laboratory or field environments by conducting experiments, conducting tests or servicing equipment; quality control.
- Prepare test setups involving cabling, mechanical work – ducting, wire tray, instrumentation, scaffolding and metering individually and as part of a crew
- Assist with field commissioning and acceptance testing of electrical power equipment.
- Assist with and sometimes assemble and maintain equipment, processes, systems and development of test methods.
- Read and mark up electrical schematics and single line diagrams using CAD tools
- Move equipment and goods needing crane operation and forklift usage
- Participate in the analysis of test results and data by use of standard software packages
- Write reports of a predominantly routine nature.
- Respond to customer inquiries, maintain good customer relations and solve problems.
- Ensure customer satisfaction by following good quality and safety practices in all aspects of the work performed.
- Perform clerical duties, such as word processing, maintaining filing and record systems, faxing and photocopying.
- Perform routine processes and duties such as shipping, receiving, inventory control, etc.
- Perform other duties as required.

- Perform craning, forklift operation, shipping, receiving, calibration, housekeeping, inventory control and maintenance.
- Perform clerical duties, such as word processing, maintaining filing and record systems.
- Periodically assist with testing of fabrics, garments and equipment in the high current lab.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Electrical Technology Diploma at the community college level or equivalent.
- Ability to travel and flexibility to meet tight deadlines
- A period of 5 years related experience or equivalent advanced education in related areas such as electrical technology or engineering.
- Requires knowledge of electrical theory and testing standards to understand the requirements for HV testing of rotating machines.
- Knowledge of electrical control system and ability to create and troubleshoot software programs e.g.: LabVIEW
- Experience with rotating machine maintenance and testing practices, procedures and standards preferred.
- Familiarity with data acquisition systems is a must, and the requirements for performing precision measurements.
- Basic understanding of continuous improvement techniques.
- Motor vehicle skill: holding a valid driver’s license that allows for operating motor vehicles independently including commercial vehicles; forklift license is preferred.
- Craning and rigging experience preferred: ability to operate lifting devices (e.g. scissor lift, work platforms)
- Ability to exercise judgment and resourcefulness in resolving technical problems
- Physically fit: ability to move/lift/rearrange heavy items up to 50 lb; standing for extended period, crouching, kneeling etc.
- General experience operating hand tools such as drill press, saw, grinder, etc.
- Ability to work effectively both alone and in teams
- Must be self-motivated, and have strong prioritizing and time management skills; have demonstrated the initiative and ability to make positive contribution to project team
- Strong written (technical and non-technical) and verbal communication skills
- Strong customer service orientation
- Familiarity with ISO17025 and ISO9001 preferred
