Spud is looking for a VP, Technology! This is a hybrid position, requiring 1-2 days per week in person at our Burnaby office.

Reporting to the CEO and leading Spud’s Development, IT, and Product teams, the VP, Technology is responsible for setting the vision and direction of Spud’s technology platforms across eCommerce, operations, and retail. The VP, Technology, will also provide important input and guidance related to other technologies across the organization.

The ideal candidate is a well-versed, hands-on technical leader with proven ability to prioritize improvements resulting in improved software architecture, customer experience, and operational efficiencies, while making an impact by contributing to a dynamic cross-functional team.

Spud is a Western Canadian online grocery delivery business comprised of a passionate team who believe that food touches every aspect of our lives, so we are advocates for sustainable farming practices, sourcing locally, treating animals humanely, and reducing food waste. We also operate our retail markets Be Fresh, Organic Acres, and Blush Lane.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assess and build off the current technology roadmap with the goal of continuously improving software architecture, customer experience, and operations efficiencies.
  • Set the strategy, standards, and procedures for technology.
  • Lead, guide, and direct the work of teams.
  • Continuous evaluation of success metrics, and address challenges that impede success.
  • Manage and maintain vendor relationships, including negotiation or renegotiation of agreements.
  • In coordination with partners, map current state to future state with business continuity and security at the forefront of decisions.
  • Work with direct reports and key stakeholders to ensure technology is designed and implemented in accordance with company goals.
  • Design and architect compelling solutions that enhance the profitability of the SPUD.ca business.
  • Provide technical mentorship and day-to-day management for Technology teams.
  • Responsible for application/technical architecture and design standards; promoting best practice.
  • Responsible for the continuous improvement of the development standards and processes.
  • Participate in budget-planning activities that achieve company goals while continuously identifying efficiencies that reduce costs and maintain or enhance service levels.
  • Set and monitor adherence to architectural principles and development standards.
  • Provide impact analysis of changes to the platform, guides team on technology strategy.
  • Additional duties as required.
  • At least 8 years of relevant engineering and leadership experience.
  • Ideally, a degree in software development or engineering with at least 5 years as a developer/engineer, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Hands on software development background including design patterns, data structures, and test driven development – ideally, you are able to read and write code yourself.
  • Experience managing large customer-facing project teams and budgets, ideally for a SaaS or eCommerce company.
  • Experience building integrations with 3rd party systems and building large scale distributed systems.
  • Ability to design large-scale, complex applications with excellent run-time characteristics such as low-latency, fault-tolerance, and high availability.
