As a Family Practitioner in the Virtual Doctor of the Day (DOD) program, you will contribute to the accessibility of primary health care services for Indigenous individuals with limited access.

About This Opportunity

Overhead expenses will be covered by the FNHA as part of the contract;

Flexible schedules and virtual care environment that fits your availability. DOD operates from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., 7 days per week, 365 days a year;

Team based care with allied health, substance use and specialists to support your patient population.

First Nations Virtual Doctor of the Day (DOD)

Title: Family Practitioner/General Practitioner – Virtual Doctor of the Day

Contract: Service Contract

Location: Remote – Anywhere in BC. BC Residence required.

The salary range is as per the Interim 2024-25 Service Contract Rates . Pre- determined rate ranges are as per the agreement, link attached for specific details on rates.

About The Role

The Virtual Doctor of the Day program enables Indigenous people in BC with limited or no access to primary care providers to make appointments for telemedicine visits. The intent of the program is to enable more Indigenous people and their family members (including those who are not Indigenous) to access primary health care services.

The program includes doctors of Indigenous ancestry, and all doctors are trained to follow the principles and practices of cultural safety and humility.

The Goals Of The Program Are To

Provide regionally-based, virtual primary health care support to First Nations people and their families living in BC.

Support community-based nurses and other health professionals to deliver primary care.

Make efforts to connect clients to in-person primary care providers and services, when required and as available.

The Family Practitioner will be responsible for practicing with cultural humility, to provide primary care in a culturally safe, team-based environment that recognizes the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the client (and family) to provide whole person care, in compliance with policies and procedures of acceptable BC health and wellness regulations and standards.

About You

  • You have an active practicing license in good standing with the College of Physicians of BC (CPSBC);
  • Certification in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CCFP) and/or Fellowship in the College of Family Physicians of Canada (FCFP);
  • You are a resident of British-Columbia.

Experience

  • You have a minimum of 3 years of recent related experience in a primary care setting;
  • You have experience working with and delivering health services to First Nations clients;
  • You have training in anti-Indigenous racism response and cultural safety and humility;
  • You have experience integrating holistic Indigenous approaches with Western approaches.
  • Knowledge
  • You have strong knowledge of cultural safety, humility and trauma informed approaches to care;
  • You have knowledge of, and ability to apply, an understanding of First Nations cultural principles and protocols in work situations;
  • You have a sound ability to practice using culturally safe and trauma-informed approaches;
  • You have the ability to apply a two-eyed seeing approach to balance western and Traditional Indigenous worldviews in practice;
  • You have an understanding of own intersectionality, power, privilege, and how these concepts may impact own work and perspectives;
  • You have an understanding of rural and remote communities and their inherent challenges and barriers;
  • You have the ability to create and foster a healthy and engaging environment that enables personal excellence, and contributes to FNHA’s vision of “Health through Wellness” and cultural safety and humility in the workplace;
  • You have knowledge of health status of populations, inequities in health, the determinants of health and illness, principals of primary care, strategies for health promotion, disease and injury prevention, health protection, curative, urgent and emergent care, rehabilitation and supportive or palliative care;
  • You have demonstrated understanding and integration of Trauma Informed Practice to care;
  • You will have the physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
