West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation (WCK) exists to provide timely, practical support to respond to the needs of B.C. kids and their families, easing their way as they navigate childhood cancer and blood disorders.

ABOUT THIS ROLE:

Reporting directly to the Board Chair, the Executive Director will work with the WCK Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic plan and annual objectives to accomplish our mission, design and carry out effective fundraising strategies, provide thoughtful leadership of all staff, public communications, and financial accountability in keeping with an approved budget


Leadership and Strategy

  • Work with the Board of Directors to develop and implement the strategic plan and carry out annual objectives that align with and meet WCK’s vision and mission.
  • Provide communications to inform the Board of Directors of organizational activities, priorities, and internal/external issues.
  • Identify the required resources to achieve the goals and objectives of the strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors in matters of policy and organizational development.
  • Maintain current personal education and understanding of the impact of a cancer diagnosis and treatment on children and families


Fundraising and Development

  • Work with Staff and Board to create and implement a short and long-term strategy for accomplishing and resourcing our future mission.
  • Identify resources needed for generating positive revenue from varied sources including individual donors, corporations, and foundations.
  • Lead campaign and donor communications.
  • Lead the planning, implementation, and evaluation of creative fundraising events.
  • Cultivate relationships with the funding community of Vancouver and surrounding areas.
  • Work alongside Board Members to make the ‘ask’ for support from major donors.
  • Support grant applications with necessary information
  • Oversee donor appreciation and stewardship
  • Speak at fundraising and stewardship events to highlight WCK's mission and vision.
  • Maintain open communication and positive working relationships with ongoing donors


Human Resources

  • Oversee the hiring and onboarding of staff members.
  • Prepare staff contracts, payroll paperwork, and onboarding documents
  • Identify opportunities for training and professional development
  • Ensures regular performance evaluations are in place and conducted with staff
  • Oversee Health benefits, paid time off, staff team building and wellness programs.
  • In collaboration with the Operations Manager, develop and implement HR policies to ensure clear expectations


Community Engagement and Collaboration

  • Provide positive leadership within the childhood cancer community locally in BC and nationally.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with key stakeholders in the community.
  • Represent WCK as the spokesperson wherever needed, including community and public events, media events, government meetings, etc.
  • Demonstrate our value of listening and asking by prioritizing input using a variety of consultation methods (focus groups, conversations, etc.) with those with lived experience of childhood cancer and blood disorders
  • Develop MOUs and clear expectations for outside partnerships


Finances

  • Lead the Staff in developing, monitoring, and managing budgets.
  • Support the Board of Directors in securing funding for the operation and future development of WCK.
  • Oversee the tracking of annual revenue


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and Experience
  • 5+ years in a senior leadership role, ideally in a non-profit environment
  • 5+ years experience in planning and executing fundraising and development initiatives
  • A relevant degree supplemented by non-profit experience or a comparable combination of education and experience
  • Valid driver's license
  • Up-to-date immunizations are required
  • A clear Vulnerable Sector Criminal Records Check


BENEFITS:

  • Salary range: $95,000 to $105,000
  • This position is 32 hours/week
  • Flexible, hybrid work environment, with occasional travel for meetings and events
  • This role is required to occasionally work evenings and weekends to accommodate community engagements.

  • 4 weeks vacation, plus 1 week office closure between Christmas and New Year’s
