The Opportunity:

The City of Red Deer is currently recruiting an IT Project & Business Support Coordinator to fill a permanent full-time position. This position supports the IT Project portfolio management strategy, driving the throughput of the projects and maximizing stakeholder satisfaction with IT. Managing the project portfolio, this position plays a critical role in collecting and updating projections of project timing and resource allocations for the upcoming period in order to provide a current and usable forecast of project resource capacity. 


The incumbent establishes guidelines and supports other IT staff in applying different tiers of PM rigor to ensure that potential quick win projects are not weighed down in too much process and that the right amount of rigor is applied to more complex, high-risk initiatives. 


This position is responsible to liaise with City stakeholders, the Information Technology Services leadership team, and external vendors to ensure enterprise technology systems and processes effectively support diverse functional requirements across the organization.  


Through both active participation and coordinating the work of others, the incumbent in this position applies industry standard project portfolio management, project management, change management, and business analysis tools and methodologies to support City stakeholders to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of business practices through the innovative use of information technology. 


This position plays a key role in supporting the core IT functional processes of Project Portfolio Management, Application Development Throughput, Project Management, Business Process Controls, and Stakeholder Relations.


As our preferred candidate, you will have:

  • Must have a 2-year post-secondary Business or Technical degree or diploma.
  • Certification in PMBOK, BABOK, or Agile Project Management practices would be considered an asset.
  • Must have 5 years’ experience in a comparable position:
  • Must include 2 years’ experience working with large volume business systems
  • Must include 2 years’ experience managing a medium sized project portfolio
  • Must include 2 years’ experience managing large scale, complex technology implementation or maintenance projects
  • Performing business process analysis and re-engineering
  • Using desktop and project software
  • Doing systems analysis, design, and implementation
  • Communicating at various levels within large sized organizations
  • Preferred additional experience:
  • Coordinating work for other staff members
  • Working in a municipal government environment
  • Providing end user consulting and/or training
  • Working knowledge of enterprise class application systems, hardware platforms, and network management systems
  • Working knowledge of web applications, enterprise class database systems, and geographic information systems
  • Working knowledge of the PMBOK, BABOK, and Agile methodologies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving abilities with keen attention to detail.
  • Strong technical documentation skills.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with departmental staff, other City departments, customers, outside vendors and consultants
  • Ability to work independently or in a team situation in a collegial atmosphere
  • Ability to work independently and act on an initiative within given guidelines
  • Strong computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office 365
  • A valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle are required for offsite meetings.
  • Must have the ability to work in a demanding and frequently stressful environment.

Remuneration:

$54.81 to $57.69 per hour. 


Hours of Work:

75 hours biweekly; Monday to Friday, some evening and weekend work may be required when needed.
