As a Landscape Technician II in Forestry, you will work as an urban forester, primarily coordinating the planting of trees throughout the City and coordinating tree work on sites recently taken over by the City. Apply your technical expertise in the office and in the field to plan, direct, and inspect the work of contractors, and collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to ensure that work is completed on time and in a safe manner. You will succeed in this role if you have a passion for trees and are an initiative-taker and problem-solver.

What will you do?

  • Facilitate the planting of boulevard and open space trees on City property
  • Facilitate tree work on trees that were recently taken over by the City through the buy-out process; this may include tree planting, pruning, removal, stump grinding, pest control, watering among other activities
  • Develop and provide tree work estimates for proposed work on City trees
  • Facilitate City tree planting within Business Improvement Areas
  • Liaison and communicate with multiple stakeholders, both internally and externally
  • Ensure quality control of tree planting as per the City of Edmonton Volume 5 Landscape Standards
  • Identify planting opportunities for renewal, and sites for transplanted trees and oversee administrative tasks associated with projects and tracking of planting costs
  • Review landscape drawings and provide comments and recommendations on planting plans
  • Administer and oversee the tree planting projects as directed by the supervisor track all associated costs and ensure that all projects come in on budget and time; this includes invoicing
  • Administer and manage contracts related to tree planting and tree transplant tenders, and ensure scheduled contractor work is done on budget and on time
  • Perform planting inspections and ensure quality control and consistency between planting projects and work completed
  • Use best management practices to encourage and implement new methodologies of caring for municipal trees
  • Assess project sites for potential planting design upgrades
  • Work closely with other City internal groups and provide recommendations to ensure a healthy planting site
  • Respond to 311 inquiries relating to tree planting work within the city and work with other internal City groups and contractors to ensure work is carried out
  • Related work as required


Qualifications:

  • Completion of a 2-year diploma or equivalent in Landscape Design, Urban Forestry, Natural Sciences or a related field from a recognized institute of technology, or Red Seal Landscape Horticulturist Apprenticeship
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in landscape construction


Assets:

  • Experience overseeing and directing contractors and/or internal staff
  • Arborist Certificate through the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA)
  • Experience in urban forestry or tree planting, including a strong familiarity of local tree species
  • Experience with GIS


Skills required for success:

  • Knowledge of landscape and construction techniques, Urban Forestry practices and terminology, and knowledge of tree selection for planting sites
  • Basic computer skills to complete the assigned work, including experience with Google Applications
  • Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment where prioritization of tasks is needed
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions
  • Ability to interpret landscape plans and specifications related to the work assigned

Conditions of Employment:

  • Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel toed boots, is a requirement for this position
  • Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's license (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
  • Must arrange own transportation to be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require business auto insurance
  • Conduct work in a manner that complies with the requirements set out in the City's Environmental Management System (EMS)
  • Applicants may be tested


Work Environment:

  • Ability to work out-of-doors for extended periods and in unfavorable weather conditions as required by the work assigned

Up to 1 permanent full-time position

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.

Salary Range: $38.908 - $48.609 (Hourly); $81,239.900 - $101,495.590 (Annually)
