Job Description

The student will assist the pavement engineering team in planning, visiting, data analyzing, and preparing road and highway surfacing strategy reports throughout Alberta and British Columbia. Based on each jurisdiction's specifications and requirements, the surfacing strategy report outlines the approach and recommendations for maintaining, rehabilitating, or reconstructing paved surfaces.

This position provides an opportunity to gain practical experience in civil/pavement engineering and project coordination.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Assist the team in planning site visits.
  • Participate in site visits to assist with gathering data related to pavement conditions, geometry and traffic volumes/traffic counts.
  • Assist in analyzing raw data related to pavement conditions, traffic, and historical pavement performance.
  • Support the creation of technical reports, presentations, and documentation for surfacing projects.
  • Assisting the project manager in preparing progress reports.
  • Assist in the preparation of design drawings, specifications, and cost estimates under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Conduct research on best practices, new materials, and technologies in surfacing strategies.
  • Assist in the evaluation of innovative techniques for road maintenance and improvement.
  • Work closely with other members of the pavement engineering team to support project goals.
  • Participate in training sessions as needed to enhance knowledge and comply with WSP’s health and safety requirements.
  • Take advantage of mentorship opportunities to develop professional skills and gain insights into career paths in pavement engineering.


What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • Currently enrolled in a civil engineering, transportation engineering, or related program at a recognized post-secondary institution.
  • Very good report-writing skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); familiarity with CAD software is an asset.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
