Role Responsibilities

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Bridge Engineering Technologist to lead specialized inspections and repairs of bridges and ferries. In this pivotal role, you’ll make a direct impact on Alberta’s transportation system, ensuring the safety and efficiency of vital structures that keep our communities connected. As a Senior Bridge Engineering Technologist, you will report to the Bridge Preservation Specialist and serve as a crucial technical resource for the GoA and Albertans. You will manage and coordinate specialized inspection programs, provide expertise in emergency situations, and support Alberta Transportation’s core mission of maintaining a safe and efficient transportation network.

Your Responsibilities Include (but Are Not Limited To)

  • Conducting audits of regional bridge inspection consultants.
  • Identifying audit sites and coordinating inspections with regional staff.
  • Preparing comprehensive audit reports and compiling results.
  • Managing and coordinating inspection programs for specialized steel structures.
  • Reviewing consultant proposals and overseeing quality assurance audits.
  • Providing advice on repair strategies for various bridge defects and damage.
  • Responding to urgent safety issues and assessing damage.
  • Collaborating with regional teams to implement immediate repairs.
  • Offering recommendations on maintenance and repairs for provincial ferries.
  • Evaluating and implementing new inspection technologies and techniques.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A related technical diploma (e.g., Civil Engineering), supplemented by a minimum of seven (7) years of relevant experience. Equivalencies may be considered.
  • Currently certified with Alberta Transportation as a Class A Bridge Inspector.
  • Registered or eligible for Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) membership with the Association of Science & Engineering Technology Professionals (ASET).
  • A valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
  • Extensive knowledge of bridge maintenance and repair methods.
  • Extensive knowledge of specialized inspection techniques (e.g., Concrete Deck Testing, Specialized Steel Inspection, etc.)

Assets

  • Experience with other bridge inspection systems (e.g., FHWA National Bridge Inspection Standards or the Ontario structure inspection manual).
  • Knowledge of specialized repair techniques (e.g. heat straightening, splicing & stressing pre-stressing strands, post tensioning, epoxy inspection).
  • Familiarity with other areas of bridge engineering (e.g. repairs / rehabilitation, construction, fabrication).

Equivalencies Are

A related university degree and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience; a related one-year certificate and a minimum of eight (8) years of related experience; or a minimum of nine (9) years of related experience.

Notes

This position is a permanent, full-time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).

Location: Twin Atria Building, 4999 98 Ave, Edmonton, AB T6B 2X3.

This position includes traveling to inspect bridges, which will comprise less than 25% of the work schedule.

Candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary.
